Years ago I learned how to do most of my own work on guitars and amps, there's still so much to learn but that's what is fun about it.
I work with a guy who has played longer than I have,40+ years and he still goes to Nashville to Guitar Center for every little thing on his guitar, that's 45 miles one way...I don't volunteer to do his work because he is so picky and will annoy you to no end,but for the life of me I can't figure out why he hasn't learned to set up his own axe.
I work on my son's gear,he's a full time musician, who is normally penniless...

Man, after a bad experience with the last guitar tech,(who obviously didn't know what the hell he was doing), so this time I thought I'm definitely gonna have to try someone else, and geez it sure is a great feeling to have found somebody who knows there way around a guitar so well and whom I can trust 100 percent.

It was getting to the point where I wasn't sure who to take my guitars to anymore but thankfully I found THE man and his able wife.

Anybody else have any bad experiences with guitar techs?

G'day Mate

I have never been unfortunate to have a bad experience with a Guitar Tech but on the other side of saying that, I really never truly understood what type of set up I really preferred until I forced myself to learn how to set up my Guitars, and do my own work.

Mate the best guitar tech will be you :)

After owning many different Strats and various G-Tars over the years,
I wish I would have bitten the bullet sooner and taught myself how to set them up and repair etc.

Like many out there I have spent so much money paying someone else to do something that I can do too.

I am pretty good at setting up Strats and Tele's, I have saved so much money over the last 5 years.

Having 13 Guitars to practise on helps though  ...

A couple of days ago a friend of mine at work was quoted $120 AUD for a full set up on his Ibanez RG Series fitted with Floyd Rose Trem.

I told him to buy strings and I would do it.

Mind you I was nervous because it was my first Floyd Rose Tremolo System I had worked on and To make things more challenging for me,
he wanted it set up for drop C tuning...I was feeling a bit of

Anyway After a bit of a balancing act I conquered the RG Series with the Floyd Rose. He was absolutely impressed and probably surprised...
So was I, I think the practise paid off in the end.

Well sorry for my war and peace, but really Mate, try to force yourself to learn how to set up your own gear now, before you make the mistake I did and paid out money I didn't have to..

Good Luck and Take Care...

I said to you speaka my language :? He just :D and gave me a Vegemite Sandwich....

I know what you mean. I have thought about driving to Nashville instead of Memphis to get tech work done. But instead I guess I'll do it myself until I get into something I can't work my way through.

I've been lucky so far, I have a great tech, but I've also learned a lot on my own. I can set up my own guitars now and replace my own parts. The only way I'll need to use him now is for fretjobs or structural problems.

If I buy a new guitar it gets a full set up and any work it may need doing buy a Tech and will do as long as i own it.

The guy who set my Godin up was great! A full setup, string change, truss rod adjustment and a bit of fret work (the ends mainly) all for £35. I gave him £40 because he went the extra mile to give me a run down on how to maintain the guitar, where it was made and his thoughs the value. The action is still amazing 4 years later. (The Tech was working at G.A.K in Brighton i haven't need to go there for years now so don't know if he is still there) Top chap

All my parts-casters and guitars I've built get serviced by me.

I've set friends and collegues guitars up for them but i insist that they are present throughout the process and I refuse payment as I am by no means a Guitar Tech or Luthier. I am an Amatuer Hobbyist at best.

I'd recommend making sure you talk to your tech and make sure he /she know exactly what you want. Then before leaving, make sure they are present when you test it out. The guy i used insisted.

Andy

I just can't comprehend the continued reliance by most players on guitar technicians. In my mind a guitar is the most personal of belongings: like a toothbrush, perhaps, or a pair of shoes. Entrusting it to someone else seems ludicrous. Furthermore it's an economically catastrophic practice. The up-front cost of a few tools is far less than the price of a visit or two to the technician. Finally, and most importantly, I feel that tinkering with one's own guitars is profoundly beneficial: it is an entertaining, educational, enjoyable, and immensely rewarding hobby.

I seconds that..... But it seems people I have done things for have almost a mystical feeling about a guitar, like it is a deep mystery. When I show them how easy it is to set up a guitar, it is alike a person who went to the dr to have a sliver pulled out. "WOW, that is all there is to it??" they say.

But then again, there are some people who should NEVER touch a guitar.....

I've had guitars for over 20 years, but never did anything myself on them other than change the strings, adjust the action and intonation.
After signing up for the forums and reading everybody's great tips and knowledge, I can do most basic work.

I can all my own wiring, I've added pickups, switched pots and 5 way switches, painted my own guitar, fixed an amp, learn to adjust truss rods.

I've still taken a guitar to a tech to fix some frets, but everything else I've done myself, with help from all of you.

Which is why we're here. Well done.
