How does the number of trem springs, 2,3,4 or 5 affect the way it works and how it plays? Thanks

One thing I am aware of is more springs make the tremolo stiffer to bend.

I use four springs on my 62 Vintage Reissue. Keeps the guitar from going out of tune. I'm using Ernie Ball '10-46' strings.

I use 5 springs and a blocked trem just like Eric Clapton. Makes me sound just like him when I play.  8)

By the way, I just picked up the book on Jimi Hendrix's equipment. There is a photo in there with him playing (what else?) a Strat that clearly shows 5 trem springs hooked up.

I feel very strongly about this. Fender ships their guitars with three springs. This is sufficient to keep the tremolo and strings in sync when following the setup guidelines. It takes time and effort, but when setup correctly your Stratocaster can be like Jeff Beck's axe.

That's very arbitrary. Some people want a very loose trem with very light strings which would mean fewer springs. Other's use heavier strings and a decked trem which requires more springs. Then some (like me) don't use the trem at all and want it pulled down tight using all 5 springs and maybe blocked. In other words, what's best for you may not be best for someone else.

+1

Although I do have one Strat with 4 springs (middle position open) and it stays true with moderate trem use.

On my AmDlx I use 3 and have it set to float; I can raise pitch with the bar quite alot. Yes, it stays in tune great.

On my HR I have all 5 set flush becasue I don't use that trem at all.

I have a set of strings from my local music shop, their own brand, .009 to .042 set. I have 3 springs in a triangle, and that thing will dive bomb all day without going out of tune :D . I've been meaning to make it floating, does anyone know how to do that?

Back the spring-claw off until you get the amount of float you need. Retune and repeat as necessary.

5 springs. I like the stiff trem action. Plus, when you bend a string, I don't think the other notes flatten out as much when you float the trem.

As I don't use my trem, 5 springs, and the bridge flush to the body. And, at some point, I may block it, too.

I use the trem very seldom so my Strats have 5 springs and floating.
