It's quite true, Elliot. The Stevens birdseye neck finally went onto the other Pewter Strat during the first week of September.

I saw a Gene Shaw photo of EC with this particular guitar during a gig at Brendan Byrne's Meadowlands Arena/Izod Center (East Rutherford, NJ) in 06/9, wearing a "houndstooth" shirt and holding his cigarette on his right hand behind a Peter Cornish rack and a pair of SLO-100s. I've got a big trouble to find a couple of pictures from that concert because Gene has protected his site's content with Adobe Flash. At least I've found a picture from the Brendan Byrne/Izod's Crossroads bash of that period:

EDIT: Finally I've found a couple of pics showing Eric wearing the famous houndstooth shirt. (Photo credits: Barry Fisch).

Perhaps the big moment was during the Nordoff-Robbins charity bash held at Knebworth House in 30/6/1990 when Eric broke a string on the "birdseye" while performing Before You Accuse Me and switched to the "flame" shortly after Phil Palmer's personal solo.

I just received a Custom Shop EC Strat a couple weeks ago as a grad gift. I love it to death so far, but must admit I'm already toying with the idea of putting my lace sensors from a project strat into this guit. I am still 90% sure I will let the guitar remain the way it is though, I'd hate to mess with something made in the custom shop. But the black lace sensors would look pretty bad $@! with the daphne blue!

Lace pickups with black covers on a Daphne Blue LTD? Why not to replace the white plastic parts with matching black? I saw David "Edge" Evans having a Graffiti Yellow EC fitted with black plastic parts. Unless you decide to give this guitar a something different look!

Black pickups mounted on a single-ply white pickguard are pretty cool.

Man, can you post a couple of pictures from your modified EC LTD?

I'd leave that guitar intact were I you and play 'footsie' with those LS's in some other guitar. Once you start 'mucking' around with a Custom Shop instrument you lose all the advantages of the Custom Care plan if the guitar was purchased new for you, and particularly if you've got one of those rare LTD's which it sounds like you do.

Great thread!

Here's a pic of my 22 fret 88 in Torino Red. I recently bought a new Clapton Signature in Olympic White. I've replaced the VN's with Gold Lace Sensors and she plays and sounds every bit as good as the old girl :) .

I share your preference for the Lace Sensors. My concern was his looking at breaking up an LTD EC Grey.

^^^

I'm in total agreement with you there ZZDoc...too nice to mess with IMO also.

Whilst I don't dislike the VN's I much prefer the Lace Sensors after having A/B'd the two through the same amp. I'm not one of Eric Claptons greatest admirers (doubt he's one of mine either!) but I do love the sound of these guitars. I wouldn't own a Strat without the mid-boost circuit.

I had 'em in a '93 TelePlus, and a '97 Clapton. I had swapped the Tele for the Clapton and later the Clapton for a Clapton based CS Teambuilt guitar which had SCN's in it with the midboost. A fairly awesome combination. A couple of months before I swapped that one out for my Gilmour I bought a nearly mint
'89 Pewter, which made it easier to swap out the CS guitar. But I like the 'thickness' of the LS's. Eldred said tells the tale that they offered EC the VN's as a tryout and he liked them,[less muddy I am told] which apparently accounts for the 'moving up'. He gave us that info in response to a remark I made regarding my suspicions that they were looking for an avenue out of needing to use Actodyne's pickups so they developed a noiseless pickup which they hoped EC would adopt. Quien sabe!! Those Bill Lawrence created SCN's were touted, in their time, as the best thing since sliced bread as far as the 'authentic vintage Fender tone' was concerned, and they were noiseless as well.

All's fair in guitar wars, I suppose.

Why not breaking up also an LTD Daphne Blue?
