Ok... so I'm thinking of building myself a new strat but really want this one to be a "keeper" and outfitted exactly the way I'd like. I'm thinking of a HSS configuration and would like to use a Fender S-1 switching system. All the diagrams on the fender page seem to be of noiseless pickups (in the single coil slots) and have a third wire. It already looks like a rats nest in there so the extra wires aren't helping me figure this out any easier. Has anyone has tried this with "regular" single coils, the S-1, and a humbucker (which I guess would need to be a 4 conductor model of some sort) The other part in question is the super confusing looking 5-way switch...where could one of those be found?

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has a wiring diagram (or knows of a model fender offers that I could look up on their wiring diagrams) with regular single coils and a humbucker utilizing the S-1 switching?

It seems like a more advanced wiring project and I feel up to the task I'm just curious if anyone has any advice, suggestions or experience with a similar project...Much Thanks!

Hello!

Your plan is possible and I like it!

A Five way Super Switch can be found at allparts and plenty of other places

http://www.allparts.com/5-Way-Oak-Grigs ... 79-000.htm

Heres the American Deluxe Stratocaster® HSS diagram

http://support.fender.com/diagrams/stra ... 02APg2.pdf

Just ignore the extra ground wires (middle wire on the single coils) on the fender diagram. and you should be fine.

If you like let me know the type of pups you wish to use and i'll make you your very own custom wiring diagram which may be a little bit easier to read than the Fender one. It may take me a little while as my work commitments are pretty heavy at the mo.

Hope this helps

Andy

Thanks so much...

I'm thinking of using an F spaced Dimarzio 36th Anniv. In the humbucking slot and either CS fat 50's or Fralin Vintage Hots up front. Another few questions...what about potentiometer and capacitor values? Also, would I want a reverse wound middle pick up or a regular wind? Do you have any other suggestions or pointers?

I'd be very grateful for a simplified wiring diagram but no rush...just let me know how you want to get it me...I guess by e-mail?

Thanks so much for your help...as usual, the lounge proves to be an amazing resource and a wealth of information!

Hello!

No problem!

The Fat 50's and the Fralins have the same wire colour codes so the diagram should work for either pups. I'd use 250k pots and a.022mf cap. I'm not sure about the effect a reverse wound pup would have on the S-1 switch but I believe it may be best to go with a regular wound pup .

These are the switching combos for the American Deluxe Stratocaster® HSS which is what you'll end up with.

I'll post the wiring diagram here so others can use it if they want.

Let me know if your happy with the above and I'll make a start

Andy

That's a start, thanks for all your help. As goofy as it sounds, I'm thinking about making a giant cardboard mock up and wiring it up with string or using colored markers, just to practice on something of a larger scale... I've soldered up a number of s/s/s strat assemblies and feel pretty good about my soldering skills but the sheer number of wires and connections with this project seems daunting. I'm really looking forward to it though...

Hello!

Thats not goofy at all! If fact its a great way to make and check a wiring diagram. I used to draw out my wiring and then cross off each correctly wired wire as i went along.

I agree the S-1 is a bit scary when you first see it. But youv'e got the right idea with your mock board. Once you brake it down wire by wire its not so bad.

If you want to get stuck in heres the wiring colour translations for Fender to Dimarzio 4 wire humbuckers

Fender = Red Black Green White
Dimarzo = Green White Red Black

One wiring diagram comming up!

Nope, I wasn't but many thanks! I guess the next step is to start accumulating some parts. I'll a get a post going once I start if anyone's interested. It will likely be a few weeks but I'm stoked...it should be a pretty fun guitar when I'm done. Thanks Andy for all your help!

Thanks guys!

I recommend getting my work double checked before you wire it up, but I recon that it.

Its not that hard to be honest all i've done is copy the fender diagram with Jamguys pickups in mind. I have a template for my own use saved so I can mess around a bit.

Enjoy!

Andy
