Hi guys,

I posted a similar question to this over in the Custom Shop area, so for those of you that frequent over in that section of the forum too (as do I), you have possibly already read this.

I am looking for some information regarding the colour 'Aged Cherry Sunburst' such as date introduced and usage etc?

I have an old Fender catalogue from 1982 in which the colour 'Cherry Sunburst' was listed as available on the Standard Stratocaster and Standard Telecaster.

I have seen pictures of Fenders painted in both 'Cherry Sunburst' and the 'Aged' version but I think the difference must be quite subtle as there isn't really much between them. Mike Eldred says that it is simply a more 'faded' version. I don't know if any of you could elaborate a little more on that?

The reason I have an interest in this colour is that I have recently ordered a Strat in 'Aged Cherry Sunburst' and think it is such a beautiful, rich colour and would just like to know a little more about it.

I used to admire a Stratocaster used by Richie Sambora in the mid 90's which was either in 'Cherry' or 'Aged Cherry Sunburst'? So, I always wanted to get one in that colour since I saw him with that guitar.

Also, can anyone advise me of the best book to buy on the Stratocaster regarding its history and various models etc? I have seen one for sale, simply titled 'The Stratocaster' (I forget who it was written by). Has anyone else read this book and is it worth getting?

Thanks as always for any help or info,

Russ :)

You're quite right!

The Aged Cherry Burst finish is a slightly darker variant of the classic Cherry Sunburst. Both finishes look great on an attractive quilted maple top over a Northern Swamp ash body.

You told us that you've ordered a Custom Shop Strat with the Aged Cherry finish. A Custom Deluxe built upon the Sambora platform, I suppose.

From my understanding you're a huge Bon Jovi fan and you're looking for an early Sambora Strat with the huge star inlays, HSS pickups, original Floyd Rose locking tremelo and 25dB mid-boost circuit. Tough luck, my friend, this model is no longer produced, though I saw a pic of Todd Krause building this particular guitar for a NAMM show in 1993.

Yes, that is a very nice guitar indeed! I was looking for one of those for years, but as you say, they don't build them any more (they have actually been discontinued for quite some time now) and are quite rare to find!

I think they were actually an alder body with an ash veneer if I remember correctly (not sure about the actual guitar Sambora played, but I'm sure that was the case for the artist model which was available to the public).

I've heard mixed opinions on the looks of this guitar, mainly due to the fact that it is quite removed from the 'traditional' Strat, with the bridge humbucker, Floyd Rose and star inlays as fret markers. I do personally think it is a beautiful guitar, but I can also appreciate their point of view.

I'm actually quite pleased that I have eventually ended up going for a more 'traditional' looking Strat (Custom Deluxe Stratocaster in Aged Cherry & maple) that, although it will look very much similar to the Sambora guitar, using the same colour scheme, it will also remain very traditional looking/sounding too! :)

You say that the Aged Cherry is slightly 'darker' than the standard Cherry, by this, do you mean a darker red?

Also, have you any idea if Sambora's guitar was in the standard or aged cherry colour? I have seen it advertised by both private and trade sellers as both, so I'm not entirely sure which it actually was?

Thank you for your reply anyway and for the great pic

In my personal viewpoint, Aged Cherry looks much like a slightly dark outer shade of brown fading smoothly into a subtle burst of red and yellow. The regular Cherry is similar but a bit lighter.

Feel free to note that I'm not an expert with the custom DuPont car paintjobs Fender uses since the 1950s.

Kindest Regards,

John

I really like the look of that guitar modeled after Sambora's, not sure how much I dig the stars, but the rest is awesome. As far as books go, I really enjoyed "The Stratocaster Chronicles."

Thanks for the info guys, I have posted a question to ME regarding that Sambora Strat and its colouring over in his section. I'll let you know if he gives any further information on it!

I like the aged cherry burst finish because it's very similar to a favorite finish of mine: Sienna Sunburst. The American Deluxe line would benefit from offering that finish, but as long as the aged cherry is available, it's not a huge deal, IMO.

Cheers!

John, I don't suppose you have this picture of the Todd Krause, Richie Sambora Stratocaster that you posted, saved in a higher resolution file by any chance?

Only, I am actually now using it as a colour match for my CS Strat and thought if I could send it to them again but in a slightly higher resolution, it might help. Not to worry if not, they did say that the picture was fine!

Thanks for posting the picture in the first place!

Russ

Dear Russ,

Unfortunately it's the only hi-res picture I've found.

Yet it's possible to resize it into a higher resolution, but I didn't care very much about that process, because shrinking an image might cause it to become blocky and sluggish. Also, feel free to note this cherry Sambora Strat is not mine.

If you want a much higher-resolution picture, you should contact the owner of this guitar via email.

Sorry for any inconvenience and many thanx for the reply.

Cheers,

John

I'm pretty certain if you ask the CS for "Aged cherry sunburst" that you'll get the same thing in that pic.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply, I never actually assumed that you owned this guitar, but thought you might have down sized an original file to be suitable for use on the forum. Not to worry :)

You say that I should contact the owner of the guitar via email? Do we know the owner of this guitar then?

Can I ask if you can remember where you originally found this picture of the Todd Krause Sambora Stratocaster?

Thank you for your help

Russ

It appears that the guy who owns the Sambora Cherryburst is Spanish or Latin American, hence his page is written in his native language.

Here's his e-mail address:

Steel Edge has an impressive collection of the most incredible-sounding axes Fender and other guitar manufacturers ever produced, here's a fine selection of his arsenal:
