Hello

I am just looking for some opinions.
I want to get a humbucker to replace my bridge pickup in my 09 American Standard Strat.(a single space direct replacement humbucker)

I have heard of the Seymore Duncan hot rails or JB-jr pickups and a few others.

The hardest stuff I play is along the lines of Breaking Benjamin, which can be pretty heavy at times.

Also, should I wire this so I can use one of the tone knobs?

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I like the SH4 JB 'bucker....but that doesn't mean that you will.

+1 on the Seymour Duncan JB Humbucker...not the JB Jr. (I think the JB jr that is designed to fit in a single coil space looks corny). I have the JB in one of my strats, and it is the best pickup I've ever played. I put it in 12 years ago, and haven't looked back.

i neglected to say this about the hotrail. it sounds great clean too. not quite as good as the factory pickups (for the classic strat tone) but i'm running on just the hotrail alone.

Hi,
Actualy I installed both in my MIM strat, the JB jnr (came back with wrong colour cover), played it a while and then replaced with the hotrails. Both are really good, but would say that I prefer the hotrails. Either way makes the instrument very versitile, can play great bluesey leads on neck position and can do some serious rockin' stuff on the bridge position. Compares very favourably with HSS set-up.

I have a hot rails and I like it, but would consider a JB.

I've never seen anything on Seymour Duncan's site which says that the 'single spaced' humbuckers are voiced for the typical 250K pots that come standard on strats, which is a shame. They should have this noted somewhere...

So I tested it. I initially installed the HR (hot rails) in the bridge position, with Fender vintage noiseless which come with 500k and 1mg pots, then I went back and put in the usual 250K.

The difference was pretty big to me. Running clean, with the 250k pots, the HR very muddy and thick with too much mid-range. It felt like the 'tops' of were muffled by a sock. Not a lot of string definition. With the 500k and 1 meg wiring , there was more treble and better string definition. Still very beefy with a good deal of mid-range, but they sounded 'clear'.

I even A/B'd it with a ESP EC, which has a full size JB, and though there wasn't a terribly big difference, they both sound like hot humbuckers, I thought the JB was a little more treble-y and had even more string definition.

I don't know what regular single coils would sound like with 500k pots. I suspect they'd be shrill sounding...

Hope this helps...
