Hey all, I'm new to the forum but I've been browsing for quite some time. I've wanted an American Strat for years and yestruday I finally got the deal I wanted! Went to Guitar Center in Orlando and they had a 2006 American Standard Strat (Olympic White w/ Rosewood) on sale for $650. I traded in my acoustic and ended up taking the guitar home for $350. Also bought a Marshall MG30DFX - match made in heaven.

I'm wondering about a few things... I'm relatively new to guitar (especially electric guitar):

Should I have it set up and how often should this be done?
Recomendation of cleaning eqiptment?

Any other care tips would be greatly appriciated!

Get it set up asap by a pro. After that you really don't need to mess with intonation often. As far as cleaning stuff goes, I use Dunlop polish and that's it.

congrats on your strat! its a great feeling, isnt it? Most, if not all Fenders come with 9 guage strings. If you are planning on playing something different, i would say get the setup quickly, if not its not such a big deal. Would play better with a pro set-up but not all together a necessity. Especially if your bank account is hurtin after the guitar center trip.

Thanks a lot for all of your responses! It is a great feeling to finally own one. I'll have to check out some good places to get it set up just to make sure. Thanks again!

Welcome to the club old boy - Strats are beautiful things you can be sure of that.

I've had 3 over the years and yes, on occasions I drift away and play another type of guitar but I always come back to Strats....a bit like the wife really :wink:

There's really nothing like your first Strat. My first was Olympic White with rosewood fingerboard. Now, 16 years later, it's more of an Ivory color. I now have three, including my No.1.

If I may butcher a poem by A. E. Housman:

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
‘Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your Strat away;
