Hey guys,
I've noticed that theres two minute cracks in the poly finish in my gee-tar. like i'm talking minute cracks ie, maybe 4 or 5 mm long. They're on the main body and not near any joints or hardware and they aren't gaping cracks either just hairline and don't appear to be from a ding, you'd probably only see them under the right light. Now to be honest as they are, they don't bother me, I like like my guitars to be in good condition but general wear and tear doesn't bother me.
I'm just wondering, does leaving it and not repairing it (super glue, which in itself would be a hassle as like i said before, they don't appear to be from a ding and are flush with the surface) open it up to cracking more etc. I don't know if it's stress cracks, would a stress crack only crack 4 or 5 mm?

I'm know one of them has been there since i got it second hand a few months ago and that hasnt seemed to cracked anymore.
But yeh, is it typical for poly, once a crack has appeared for the crack to keep cracking?
Is it safe just to leave it because it doesnt bother me at the moment? Where i live in New Zealand, the humidty doesnt really fluctuate wildly.

From what I've read.........cracks can be caused by rapid temperature changes. This is due to expansion differences between the wood and the paint job (they expand at different rates) I often take my guitars between average house temperatures, and very cold climates (below freezing). From what I've heard..........you should let the guitar adjust slowly, leaving it in the guitar case. After some time......crack open the case and let a little air go in.......then close it and let it adjust some more. I've done this.........going from about 70 degrees to a house which is down down to freezing. I usually leave the guitar in the case, until the house temperature gets back up to about 70 degrees. Never had a crack happen yet (knock on wood).

the guitar is only at home though. the most rapid changes in temp it would be subject to would be house temp changing from day to night. It's a poly finish, so would it crack so easily from temp changes?

No......that shouldn't do it.

I have a couple of old American Standards that have some small cracks like that,I would think the wood will shrink over the years causing some of it.
