I've been looking for a Mex Strat to do some mods on and found this 1999-2000 American Series locally. It's Olympic white and includes the molded Fender case. No dings, dents, cracks, or chips. The owner tells me he took great care of the guitar but it did have a few very light belt marks on the back, though not thru the finish.

I own a 2001 Am.Std. and wanted a fat Strat without doing the mods to mine. I have the complete and new Am. Fender electronics including Alnico V's and a Demarzio Super Distortion pickup.

The seller is asking $475 for the 2000 Am.Std.
I'm looking for opinions, $300 Mex or $475 Am. Std. ?

Or,
Am I an idiot because I have to ask?

Go the American Standard all the way...

As you may be aware the AM Standard has better build quality and a better bridge and electronics..

For that price I would...

You already know the answer.

That is a great looking guitar. If you don't buy it you will be regretting it for many years to come.

That's an awesome deal, sounds too good to be true, unless he's a friend of yours. I've never seen an American strat sell for less then $550 (That one was horrible in condition). Most sell for $650 and up.

American Standard.

But -- and this is a big but -- at that price you should be asking yourself why the price is so magnificently low. Make sure you examine that guitar from end to end; look for signs of outright fraud as well as unmentioned modifications or repairs. The best course of action is to ask for a series of detailed photos (neck pocket, pickup routing, inside the trem cavity etc.) to post here: a number of forum members will be able to tell you quickly and cogently.

If it looks great, rejoice. You've landed the best deal I've ever run across.

If I could get hold of that here in the UK... I'd be more than happy to bid up on it. Lovely guitar at a great price: why can't I find them here?????? :x

Check the guitar out real good. Make sure that neck is straight. Check the knobs and stitches. If everything checks out, I'd jump on that deal.

Awesome deal!!!!

I'd shell out the extra bit for a US-made strat. Not only is that an excellent price, but it'll hold it's value in the long run and you could probably turn in a profit if you ever planned on reselling it.
