I recently bought a beautiful new 09 Fender Deluxe Strat Vintage White and I had a question.

I had this set up professionally and they state if I need or want to change to bigger strings of a different tunings I would have to bring it in to get adjusted. I do want to tune it a 1/2 step down. Would this really need to be readjusted? The string size part does make sense though.

Btw Hi to all. I been following these threads for sometime but thought Id go ahead and join once in a while.

If all your gonna do is tune a half step down, no string gauge change, nothing is needed. Going to bigger string change will at least require an intonation adjustment. Hope this helps....Welcome to the forum............ 8) Mike

Classic guitar shop money grab.

Setting up a guitar is nothing you can't do on your own. The wealth of information on the internet has made tinkering with instruments easier than ever before. The resources are incredible: anyone can now, with no instruction and only a few minutes of reading, set up a guitar. It might take awhile -- go slow -- but it can be done. For free. And it's fun.

String guages and tuning make a difference because of the tension on the neck. Flat tuning (or 1/2 step down) releases some of the pressure and could case the neck to backbow and the strings play out of tune past the 12th fret. (Not to mention possible string buzz)

Great guitars, congrats. Putting on heavier gauge strings will add more tension and pull up the tremelo and raise your action a bit. Best to have it set-up by pro, if your not sure how.
