Do you strat players leave your back plate protector on or do you guys take it off? Does the plate cover really protect much?

I take it off, its nor really there to protect anything but rather to just make the back of the guitar look clean aesthetically. No need for it to be there so I remove them on all my guitars, makes string changes and adjustments easier, plus I think it looks cooler.

Put it on ... leave it off. It makes little difference in the grand scheme. Just don't attribute monster tone to whether it's on or off. You'll only make yourself look like a FOOL if you do, one way or the other. Forums like this are susceptable to huge arguments over tone regarding such subtle nuances that even professionals can't agree. Please yourself esthetically and leave it at that.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I second that notion.

I take mine off. I'd love to take the one off of my Clapton Strat but the battery is in there. Maybe I should send it to Ceri for a battery box installation.

I second that notion.

And I third it.

I keep 'em on guitars that came with them; my new-builds are constructed without backplates. If anyone can hear a difference... they have better ears than me!

Hee-hee - thank you! If you bring it over and bring the guitar as well, why, I'll install a rebated battery box for you if you like, over a friendly beer. :D

...Though there are others who can do that for you too, and are not two oceans away.

Cheers - C

I believe people pull them off when they still have the factory protection stickers on them so when they sell or trade in the guitar, it gives the appearence of being like new.

My oldest Strat from 1970 has the cover off. My newer 1991 Strat Ultra still has the plate on. This is because the 2-point tremelo, with a tremsetter hardly needs any adjustment. The 6 point trem on the older guitar needs some help, occasionally.

There is no difference in sound, on or off.

I might try that tonight just to see... but I don't think it will make a difference either clean or distorted.
