ah mate it's the bane of my life.
What I do is cut up a old tshirt and drape it over the stand. If you use a black shirt it looks great onstage against a black backing. All people can see are these guitars suspended 2" above the ground.

LOL.Thats a great idea about a black tee shirt though.I know cotton is safe and it wont look so tacky, plus I wont have to spring for a new stand.I didnt even know the foam on the stands would harm nitro until I bought my new guitar and read it somewhere online. Thanks for the tip.

Whatever you do Bud, treat that nitro finish with kid gloves. Most foams will constantly outgas to a certain extent right up until the point that the cells dry out and it begins to disintegrate and flake away. The cotton strips are probably an excellent method of shielding the guitar from direct contact with any foam padding.

That guitar stands could damage guitar (nitro) finishes, came as a real shock to me - especially as I found out the hard way.

I over reacted and threw 4 (otherwise good quality) guitar stands in a skip..

Take a good look at your guitar straps too. They can cause as much damage to delicate finishes as some stands.

Arjay, I was suprized at how delicate nitro is.The guitar I have is a thinskin, so I want to be extra careful.I never used to be as diligent about wiping my guitar down until now, especially the back of the neck.Adey ,good idea about the straps.I use only leather ones , but I need to check if the one I use is ok for it.I gotta tell you , those 59 thinskins are awesome guitars.I really like the pickups on those things.

For a whole host of reasons, I really do think nitro finishes are more than worth the considerable problems they can cause. But I would have some sympathy with anyone who believes that such finishes are not really fit for purpose..

The only plus I see to a nitro finish is the look of the thing over time. My Hotrods heading more towards plum than red these days.

Budglo, the leather strap fender include with em is fine. Be very carefull when wiping the thing mate. I put a scratch in mine just through wiping it too hard. The thinskin finish is made for one thing only, to age fast. I resigned myself to letting the thing go to relic'ing at its own pace. I just dont worry about it any more.
In a few months time when you see dings appear that you haven't done, and the guitar has lived in its case. You'll know what I mean. My Hotrod came out the case fourteen times in the first year. I picked up two dings and a scratch in that time. I dunno how the dings got there. It was never unattended when out.

Indeed, Bud. And for some reason, Fender's lacquer finishes have always seemed more prone to staining and marring than Gibson's. Also, as has been mentioned, be wary of leather guitar straps. They attract and hold sweat and other epidermal acids which can react badly with nitro much more so than those made of nylon or other synthetics. Take care of that ax, boss.

Yeah my Highway 1 has a few dings and a scratch in it that I am not sure how they got there. I say pull those Nitro and/or thin skin guitars out and play them like they are supposed to be played. Guitars can't stay new looking forever. They were made to be played, so play them!!!

Good advice from everyone.I will just have to be as careful as I can be , but like you say niki, just resign myself to the fact that it will relic faster than my SRV , which is bulletproof. As much as I like the finish of the thing, the main reason I bought it was because of the neck and pickups on it,(although I love the color and the ash body).I havent been disappointed with it either.

Maybe I'm a bit anomalous, but I couldn't care less what my guitar looks like. Nicks, scratches, dings, and other miscellaneous imperfections, along with simple wear, are part of the game: I knew what I was getting into buying a nitro-finished guitar. I love it, actually; when it ages, it will be unequivocally my guitar.

Bud

Check out the "Ultimate GS 1000 Genesis" I have had just about every stand known to man, and these are by far the absolute best. The guitar hangs from the headstock and the body edge rests on the faux velvet legs. I have dozens of high end guitars hanging in these stands for years. They are very very stable, easily adjusted, and have never left any kind of mark on any of my guitars. Try one of these...the last stand you will ever need. Congrats on the new guitar!

Thanks I will check that out.I dont have a problem with normal wear to a guitar, its part of the deal, but I dont really want to see black marks on it from sitting on the stand.
