I have a '90 MiM Standard I've had from new and to be honest the electrics really weren't great, but the body and neck are superb. It now has Laces and mid-boost and I wouldn't change it for the world. However, when circumstances allowed I got myself an '06 US Standard and hard as I tried I just couldn't love it, it neither felt or sounded as good as I hoped it would so it found a new home. I now have a '97 MiM Super Strat and a '10 American Deluxe which are fantastic.
Getting all philosophical a guitar comes from living wood and every one has to be different in some way. A budget instrument may well sound and feel better than an expensive one for this reason so the golden rule remains 'try before you buy'.

for most of my years playing i used my Kramer Beretta as my main guitar,
up until the mid 90's when i switched to my Samick Les Paul.
as i was only gigging in clubs across the states, and have played in almost every state.
i did not have the luxury of having a guitar tech to take care of my guitars.
the national acts will have a guitar tech to do all their work,
and even better care for their guitars. if a tech finds a problem, it is fixed ASAP.
they carry around a lot of extra parts just in case something goes wrong.
i always had a few extra small parts with me, and a soldering iron.
yes you will get a bit more wear and tear if your playing every day,
but i know people that play every day that are not traveling,
for example, before i stated playing in a band, i would play 8 hours + a day.

Ah, that would explain it. You had better quality gear that you were playing on. I kinda doubt a Starcaster or Squire would hold up to the riggers of a pro.

From 2006 to today Fender MIM's are the best that they have made.

Now days I get the impression that the biggest issue is the cost of labor rather than the parts and workmanship put into the guitar.
