IMO it is up to the individual to pisk the "best year". I have several MIA Strats and MIMs..by far my favorite overall is the new 2010 MIM in LPB that my wife bought for my in July. It is IMO perfection from fit and finish to tone and playability. All my other strats are now cased up and this is the one I primarily gig and record with in the Strat line.

I would (And did) buy a new 2010.

Good price point, very well made and a lifetime warranty.

How can you go wrong?

G'day from Oz. I'm new to this forum & this is my first message.
I own 2 Mex Strats (got the 2nd one today). Both were 2nd hand. I also have a Highway 1 Strat (the first series). I must say the first Mex Strat I bought plays & feels alot better than the Highway 1. Having said that, I played the Mex Strat in the store & had it set up properly (truss rod adjusted to handle 46-10's). Yes I did replace the pickups with EMG's (81,SA,SA), but that was always my intention so I could play Rock & Metal. Replacing pickups can be a cheap, easy & effective way to improve any Guitar (if it feels good to play). Now this Mex Strat absolutely Smokes!!
Now let's talk about my Highway 1 Strat. My Highway 1 Strat seems to have been made on a Friday. This is only the 2nd guitar I have purchased brand new (at least 12 2nd hand). I was absolutely gutted. The neck is attached to the body crooked, rendering the thin E unplayable past the 12th fret - it just slips off the neck when fretted. There is a gap between the side of the neck & body big enough to hold a pick. The original pickups were thinner sounding than the Mex's originals. I replaced them with a set of Hot Noiseless. Still sounds thin. I think it's the Greasebucket Tone Circuitry. It seems to add extras highs (in the bridge). I had a shop order this guitar in for me. I picked it up, still in the cardboard box. If I had held it before buying it, I would have walked away. But I didn't expect any of these problems. The new Highway 1 Strats have been modified (after customer feedback). I suspect these are better - and mine is just a one off lapse (for a U.S.).

I gotta say I love my '91 MIM. Bought her brand new and she's been my main axe for just about 20 years now. Sure the later models may have better electronics, parts, etc... but to me none feels as good as MY '91. Every scratch and nick on her is a reminder of a certain time and place from the past -- a photo album of memories if you will. Sure from a purely technical stand there are production years that are better than others, but we don't fall in love for purely technical reasons. There has to be a connection, a feeling, something that bonds us -- and what that is is different for everyone. If you want to know what the best year is from just a technical standpoint, then find the specs on all of them and choose. if you want to know the best year from a player's standpoint, then play them all and let it choose you.

Keep on pickin' -- what else is there?

2011, The new MIM's are really nice. Better treatment of finish on the neck. I have a new "Blacktop" much nicer finish than my 2008 MIM.

I feel evey year that the Classic Series was built was their best years and their best built guitars. Perhaps, their best years are yet to come.

+1

I have a couple of these and assembled several others in mix-and-match fashion from separately-purchased parts. They're all great instruments with vintage-spec details and appointments. My oldest is a '99 and the newest dates to 2006.

+1 Arjay

I love the 50's 60's and 70s Classic Series. True spec hardware. The prices keep going up on these every year.

I haven't got one of the '70s re-issues yet but one of these days I'll find a bargain on one in Oly White or natural ash. So long as it weighs no more than 8 lbs.

A 70s classic series under 12lbs will be most difficult to find. They are clean sounding, and have great finish and hardware. I'm still in the hunt for a used classic 50's and 60's strat for a good price.

MIM were redesigned in 2007 and since then they have gotten much better reviews from what I've seen.

Actually it was the 2006 model that was totally redesigned and the pearl
60th anniversary special limited edition was part of that year, but they put
a small token on every 2006, so everyone thinks they have a 60th special
without the big silver 60 on the neck/body screw bracket.

(pic of my pearl is down about 6 messages).

there are many more articles about the 2006, as so much was changed for the better.

My MIM Classic Series "70s" Strat was made in 1999, and I also think it feels better-made than a lot of the new USA Fenders I've played. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another Classic Series MIM guitar, but Mexican Standards have been hit-or-miss for me. I did, however, get a steal of a deal on a 1993 Mexican Jazz Bass that plays and sounds fantastic. It really depends on the instrument, but I agree with some of the other posts that in general, quality control for entry and mid-level instruments is better than it's ever been now.

Welcome!

From 2006 and on and they get better every day. So, the newer, the better.

Also and has been most importantly stated above, even the highest of high end guitars vary from piece to piece and that's within even the same model so make sure you play a few before you buy.

Ditto. Component for component the 2006 and newer are better made guitars. I really dig some of the 1990's and below 2006 colors, but avoid them due to the afore stated reasons.

I have a 2010 Deluxe Players Strat and it is as good as any US Strat I've owned or currently own. I especially love the 12" radius nexk not found on US models. Fender gets it it quality. The only issue you would have and I'm not sure about 2007 or newer is swapping parts. I know on older MIM or MIA strats US Fender parts do not always fit properly and need adjustment. I have the see-thru blue deluxe players strat and I will be purchasing the see thru red model. The red is going to get a new pick gaurd and Seymour Duncan single coil size humbers installed. If the pick gaurd fits without adjustment I will then know for sure that Fender US is paying attention to detail on the MIM models.

I have 2006 and 2009 Standard HSSs and a 2010 '50s Classic Series. All three excellent guitars. I would recommend them to anybody, as long as you get one with a good setup.
