It really is comming along well. I love how you routed out the templates, I will add that to my tricks when I get up the guts to attempt a full build!

As for the beer ....I am not a big Sam Adams fan. I don't feel it is a fair representation of American beers. JMHO. I feel there are far better beers made here that cover palate well. Stone Breweries IPA's....I favor the Ruination IPA or the Double Bastard. :D

Again great job Andy.-N 8)

I too don't rate the Sam Adams but put me down for a crate of Double Bastard, Sounds fantastic! :D Not sure if we have Great Lakes Beers in the UK but I'll keep an eye out. The weather is getting warmer over here an I rekon it may well be time to break out the G&T's. Cheers (Clinks glasses with BN!)

Andy I think you will be fine, as you move on to final shaping, you'll be removing most of that anyway.

Nice work. it's good to keep a healthy respect for you power tools.

I agree, the sanding phase will get rid of any remaining imperfections. Those router burns are a real eye sore and I'm itching to loose them! I can safely say that I have a healthy fear/ respect for my router.

Very nice....thanks for showing us the fix and not getting discouraged with the small mistakes!

Tis a pleasure Mr X! Yep, I'm fully committed to the build now. Once that ding in the horn is dealt with fully I'll be even happier. Great pic by the way!

Right then, Mr C, I have some answers for you Sir,

Ceri wrote:
Ha! I'd been privately wondering how you'd do the cavities in multiple descending passes with only the thin perspex template. The extra MDF one answers that - neat! :D And did you do the same thing on the back, or just go in full depth straight away?

I've got a small collection of MDF spacer plates for back and front made from my master perspex ones. Its still a bit of a chore getting them all to line up before screwing them to the body then realigning them when one gets removed, but needs must.

My solution to that particular router blade issue is to simply use two or three locking collars. And re-tighten everything constantly - blades coming loose in the chuck is another method of abruptly wrecking a piece...!

Duly noted. It's the last time I buy cheap bits off Ebay for sure!

Ceri wrote:
Presumably the problem with the bridge cavity is that you've lost the overhang that would normally mean the opening on the front is smaller than the cavity beneath - is that it? Firstly: does it matter? If you put the bridge in place is it leaving an unsightly gap visible behind the bridge?

If it Ok with you I'm not going to say too much on the bridge as the next Update will be covering that issue in detail. I wish I'd keep the ruined templates but I had a minor “Freak Out” when it happened as was getting ready to send the body to the Ninjas for cremation!

The bridge I'm planning to use doesn't cover it and I'm going to use Tru Oil for the finish so scarfing anything in will still show. I've thought long and hard about the best way to get round this issue, several of those you have mentioned. I even thought about covering the entire topside in a mahogany veneer. All options will be reconsidered if my preferred solution is deemed unsuitable by my carpenter friend tomorrow.

Ceri wrote:
(BTW, I can point you at several veneer suppliers if it's of use. Though I expect you have that covered.)

You are correct, I have that one covered!

I am planing to use some veneer later in the build. I contacted H. Shawyer & Sons to get a quote for my required sizes and it turns out that they just so happened to be their sample sizes. So I got the four pieces shown below for free...which was nice! :D

I have to say Ceri, I was a reader before I joined up and that thread was brilliant. Truly outstanding work. I will be using your method to fix an overly deep neck slot on my previous Strat attempt, but thats a different thread me thinks. Your build threads are a truly awesome resource for amateurs like myself and I sincerely thank you for sharing them. You Sir, Rock!

Edit: Nice amp and strat by the way! Your cat to the left looks very similair to Randels brother Huxley (who is sadly no longer with us). Randel says "Hi" to them both! :D

Guys,

Thank you for your compliments and encouragement. It means a great deal to me.

Enjoy!

Andy

Andy,

Great work so far, even the scoobied parts that you fixed. Not to take anything away from this thread because I am watching your progress with great interest but my question is for Ceri.

Ceri,

What is the model of that Marshall amp? That looks like the size I am after. Is it a tube amp or solid state?

Back to the tread.

I like the course which this thread is taking! All kinds of discussion with regards to cats, guitars, and drinks!

I am also curious of that amp, Mr. Ceri. It does look terribly classy, doesn't it? 8)

Hi man: Twelvebar is right on every detail. Just picked up this five watt Marshall Class5 as a practice amp. I love it - and it's the first time I've been able to say that without compromise, putting a smaller amp alongside my grown-up Triple Super Lead. 'Bout as close as you can get to the Plexi sound from a small box, I'd say. Here's the info:

http://www.marshallamps.com/product_ran ... ode=Class5

A local shop was offering a great deal on the custom order finish. Basket grill cloth and what they claim to be "Racing Green" tolex. If required I can give photographic proof how far that finish is from real Racing Green - but it's kinda cute anyhow, d'ya think...?

Cheers - C

SIDENOTE: Ceri, please make another thread about the sound of your strat through your Class 5, I keep seeing bits and pieces of information about it in other threads (all the other threads infact :D). Would love to get an indepth look at the thing.

BACK TO ANDY'S BUILD! (looking good btw, covered up that mishap nicely, master builder andy ;))

There's a guy near me selling one of those class 5 amps for $299. I emailed him about a week ago about looking at it, but never got around to checking it out. But it's the standard finish I'm sure.

Hi gents: well, no need for a another whole thread for it. Let's cover it quickly here and move on.

Put simply, it's a Plexi in a small box. Nice spanky clean sound at bedroom volumes; moderate, rich '60s -ish drive sound fully cranked. Flat out it's easily loud enough for band practice or small gigs, though of course if you need plenty of clean headroom at those levels then it ain't the tool for the job - you'd need an amp with an F on the front for that...

I love it. So much that in the six days I've been messing with it so far it hasn't crossed my mind to put any kind of pedal in front of it.

I've A/B'd it against my 100w Triple Super Lead and my previous practice amp, a 100w Valvestate. The TSL is my all time personal fave and this Class5 is the first thing that comes close to the pleasure factor of that at home volume levels. I'm currently wondering if I'll ever play that (perfectly reasonable) Valvestate again? ...'Course I will: we all need a spare amp for the bathroom!

Less convinced by the color. Seems anything resembling green finds itself named "Racing Green". Well, this car really is genuine Racing Green - spot the difference:

Still. Quite pretty, no?

Back to Andy's thread...

Verrry interesting Ceri. Nik's been trying to guide me to my first tube purchase with some great info. and advice. I do like that green, and it is a Marshall - it would really match a certain stratocaster I have in the works... :D

Hi man: by the miraculous power of telepathy I do have a notion of what you're talking about. :D

BTW: apropos nothing whatsoever - what do you think about RAF target style dot markers? I bet there's something as could be done there, even on a finished neck.

Dunno why: I have a strange sense of anticipation...

Cheers - C

PS I'd take very seriously anything Nick has to say on amps. I've never spotted the slightest problem with that fella's ears. 8)

Thanks Impulse7!

You've made me go all shy...

Though, I rekon I've got at least another 30 years of practice before I can use that title!

Cheers

Ceri - are you using ESP or did Nik forward you that email as well? If so, then you'd know my difficulty with my originally desired custom inlay and stainless steel fret/compound radius conundrum?

P.S. Andy you need to give us an update or I feel alchohol, felines, and volcano's (among other things) might derail your thread! ;)

I do, yes. Even so, I don't really see why we couldn't drill out the inlays and replace them with target ones, without needing to remove the frets. Sand smooth, relacquer over the top - job done.

Mind you, I've done some searching and not found target dot inlays for sale on the net. Hmmm... I wonder how we could make some? :D

Anyway. Back to Andy (take it away, man!).

Cheers - C
