Howdy!

Thanks for the posts people!

Sorry about the lack of Updates recently but as we all know there's been some maintenance issues with the forum over the last few days and I wasn't able to log on properly. I had the best intentions but I've ran out of time so just a quick post for today.

Big “Heavy” Strat.

I did promise I'd weigh the body before I installed all the hardware.

Image

The body weighs in at 2kg 185g. Its a weighty beast!

Image

The Big Hairy loaded pickguard comes in at a whopping 467g.

Do you lot want that coveted into US or metric pounds? Let me know or if someone fancies saving me the trouble, post it up!

Me and Randel the Cat have been hard at work over the last couple of days putting the last few bit & pieces together. I have to say Randel's final QC checks have been very thorough and he's very very tired right now, but has made the effort to give all his Fender Forum buddies a wave.

Image

I'm going to rest Randel for now and we'll get you a real meaty post sorted out for tomorrow. :D

Enjoy!

Andy & Randel the Cat

Hi Randel, hi Andy!

I think you did a great job on QC Randel and I think you deserve a present. Though I'm not sure it wants to meet you - it's very shy. In fact, it looks worried....

Anyway, it's still very very disturbing to see a dismantled guitar on a set of scales. I hope I can sleep tonight. Sweet dreams all!

All right. Well, off the top of my head:

2 kg 185 g = 4.81710043 lbs

467 g = 1.02955876 lbs

TOTAL BODY WEIGHT 2kg 652 g = 5.84665919 pounds

Now. We're posting mice, are we? Here's one from the archives: at our place in the country I fell asleep in front of the TV and woke in the middle of the night to find this little fella polishing off my tray dinner for me. I took him prisoner and let him go the next morning in a safe spot. So cute!

That was before the cats arrived and set about bringing in every mouse for miles around to say hello. Who knew there could be so many?

Oh, he's smiling for sure! I put him (it was very clearly a "him") in a big glass vase overnight to let him go in the morning. I was worried about his comfort so gave him a little jar lid full of milk and another with honey in it. He immediately got honey all over his tummy and then up-ended the milk over himself. Then spent a happy half hour licking it all off and cleaning himself up, before curling up and falling asleep.

...I do get that there's people here not as soft about animals as me.

Cheers - C

Quality, Ceri. I'm certain the little rascal had the trip of his lifetime. He probably thought he'd landed in Mouse Heaven, and was surely miffed when woken and set free in the morning.

You made an honourable mouseman re-think the whole concept of his existance. Cool - and as Mr. Spock would utter: Fascinating.

Hardware Installation

Today's post we'll be focusing on putting all the hardware together starting with the bridge posts. I found some nice black posts and inserts that match my trem unit and will be using those instead of the silver and gold ones.

Image

I'd made a little wooden punch to install the posts so there's less chance of me mullering the body with the hammer. Once they're in we can fit the trem claw and ground wires.

Image

Image

Anyone fancy another soldering action shot? :D

Image

Image

Still not the neatest job. :?

Anywhoo, now we can screw the claw in and fit the neck and the battery box. Due to my Big Hairy heel contour I've had to trim two of the neck screws down to stop them from breaking through the top of the fret board.

Image

I've pre-drilled the neck, battery box, back plate and trem claw holes so its just a matter of popping them in place and screwing them in

Image

Image

I do like that heel contour. Very nice!

Unfortunately due to the huge amount of gear I've attached to the pickguard I can't fit it in with the neck in place so we'll have take that off and put it back afterwards. Now we can attach the trem claw ground wire to the side of the S-1 Volume pot and make a body ground

Image

That can then be attached to the volume pot as well.

On to the Jack plate and stereo jack socket.

Image

You can just see where I've made the cavity a little deeper to take the cable jack as it can be pretty tight in there otherwise.

Image

Once that's all securely wired up we can drop that in mark out the holes and screw it down.

Before we attach the pickguard we need to make sure everything is will working and we haven't knocked a wire loose during the installation. My little Marshall Micro Stack comes in very handy for this bit!

Image

I had a brief moment of panic as nothing happened when I first plugged in.

Then I remembered that I need to fit a 9v battery. Once that was in everything worked first time with no issues! :D

Now we can fit Bridge, fit the neck back on and screw down the pickguard

Image

Then we drop in our Sperzel Tunners....

Image

that's most of the hardware done.

Oi! Twelvebar! You never said they'd want the bloody neck weighed as well :?

Oh well, needs must I suppose.

Image

The neck with the Sperzel Tuners weighs in at 722g. Ceri do your thang!

I believe you also wanted a shot of the 5 way switch tip. Here you go!

Image

Cool! So that's enough for one post. I'll be back in a bit to talk about my Big Hair Nuts!

Enjoy!

OK. Well, working it on my fingers:

2 kg 185 g = 4.81710043 lbs

467 g = 1.02955876 lbs

722 g = 1.59173753 lbs

TOTAL BODY WEIGHT 3kg 374 g = 7.43839673 pounds

(Metric is kinda easier, isn't it?)

Hey, not bad at all. But now of course we need to add the weight of the trem, battery and its compartment, and various screws, bolts, bushings and washers. Not to mention that carved switch tip. Care to pull all of that stuff off and weigh it?

...Or you could just weigh the finished guitar, perhaps? Unless you are making a lead nut I suspect that item won't make a vital difference. :D

BTW: I let that mouse go years ago - but I'd have kept him around if I knew you had a Marshall stack especially to suit him! 8)

Now. I can't tell you how frustrated we are that you haven't shown us a picture of the whole assembled guitar, merely palate whetting shots of its parts. It's like the dance of the seven veils!

Cheers - C

Ah, the anguish, the turmoil, the pain. The horror!

I am pretty sure it's a Big Hairy Marketing Strategy! ;-)

Andy is getting us hot and there's probably already the beautiful, oiled (and waxed!) Strat, fully assembled, in his hands that he is caressing right now.

And yet he teases us with Hairy Nuts! a true master of suspense!

On a more serious note: That Strat is even more beautiful than I could imagine. The grain shows up and says hello even if you give it a mere glance - contrasting with the inlay and the back of the neck it all just falls into place and makes perfect sense. Mastery!

-Nutter

PS: If we're into finding the most space-saving guitar/amp combination for your mouse friend, Ceri, only one concoction comes to mind. It is of the great Guitar Master Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap. If you get one mouse-sized I wouldn't be surprised if we had The Whizzing Minnies in the top ten soon!

God damm it! Whats wrong with you people!?! Are you not sufficiently entertained? Have I not done enough already?

Oh well, This is all I'm willing to do....

Image

Here's the body with all the trimings minus the neck. It weighs in at 3kg 869g

Ceri wrote:

Maybe I will, maybe I won't. Are you guys just fishing for a way to say my Strat is obese? Well come on then, out with it. I happen to like um Big and Hairy, so there!

Well you shouldn't keep making me dismalte the bloody thing to weigh it!

I could have been a dancer.....[Andy sighs whimsically]

More soon!

Ah, we can do no better than quote the great russianracehorse, from a similar situation:
