Andy that is great work.

Ceri and I have both mentioned it, and now you,but it can never be overemphasized: Prep Work Is Key!!!
all the sanding, and resanding, and sanding again will be worth it when the project is completed.

This is gonna look sweet. the oil should really make your inlay pop.

I think it's funny we both did racing stripes (of a sort!!)

I have never done an oil finish on a guitar so i am curious. Is your application method going to be like French Polishing?

Molly is wondering why Randell has suddenly become camera shy.

Absolutely! Can;t stress that enough! Prep Work Is Key!!!

I will be using a waded cloth to apply the oil a bit like a French polisher then remove the excess with a clean cloth....

….but to be honest, for an oil finish you could slap it on with a brush then just wipe it clean. It really is an easy finish to apply compared to the kind of Sorcery i've seen you carry out on your guitars!

The finish will be done in a matter of days and ready after a couple of weeks and that's being generous on my part.

Should look cool! 8)

P.S. : Prep Work Is Key!!!

Ha. Now here's an interesting point. For a second there I was thinking; "Whoa - too fine!" Normally when prepping for lacquer you only sand to around P300 because you actually want to leave a bit of a "tooth" to the surface to help with paint adhesion. A lot smoother could actually be a bad thing.

But of course you are doing an oil finish, so none of that applies. You positively want the very finest surface you can achieve because there's none of that lacquer flattening to come later.

Just thought I'd say all that out loud for anyone who's been thinking your process contradicts what's to be found in Don & Dan's book, Guitar Finishing Step-by-Step. It does and there's a good reason.

Anyway. What a bunch of bookish coffee drinkers we are, huh?

When the oil finish drys, does it leave a film that rubs off on your hands? And does it make a bit of a skin over the wood at all???

Good question X man, My answer is, Nope, not that I can tell and I did vigorously rub my test piece on various parts of my body to make sure. :D

Yes....I think!

Danish Oil is an oil-varnish blend. It cures to a satin sheen and is much more protective than boiled linseed oil while being just as easy to apply....

Its like a very thin varnish but doesn't cure quite as hard or as glossy. I'm after a satin finish that will show off the natural naked wood grain. I'm kind of treating this type of finish as a “decorative sealer” that will enhance the look of the woods used. I'm quite tempted to apply a very thin coat of wax after the oil has cured as I've used wax on a previous build and that turned out great. It buffs up with a cloth nicely.

Another little update on Finishing today

Here's a few pics showing my very basic finishing stand.

Image

I find it much easier to apply the oil onto a flat surface. I can also flip the body over to do the back with the support resting in the bridge pup cavity.

Here's a shot after two thin coats of Danish Oil and spirit mixture.

Image

And here's one after the first coat of pure oil.

Image

Nice! A couple more coats should do it.

That's all I've got for today folks. I promise a much more exciting update next time!

Time for a Beer!

Well I have had a truly awful week at work (again...) but made time to pop out and see my ale man. I saw this and just couldn't resist.

Image

Owd Rodger! A quality ale with a highly amusing name and at 7.6% you know when you've drunk it! :D

and to finish....one hand written message deserves another...

Image

Enjoy!

geezzzz, I like it!

I always loved oiled bodys.... (huh, that came out wrong, didn't it? 8) ), I even stripped my first guitar a while ago (pacifica strat-type) and gave her some rounds of Bri-Wax. I know it's normally for furniture, but it did the trick at the time. But you, Sir BigHair, you are the king of cool with that guitar! And the mug. :)
I also like the way the grain optically "bends" where the arm rests. Very nice from that angle.

A beaut!

impatiently awaiting next steps is:

I agree with Nutter above, oiled bodies are 8)

Such a nice looking one too! I'm glad there are threads like this to inspire guys like me to tinker with our guitars, or maybe even become the next lot of build threads!
Awesome guitar honestly can't wait for the finished product!

Cheers,

Andy that is really looking sweet!!

Did you weigh your body naked? cuz Nikininja started the tradition of pre and post finish weights. I would be curious as to how minimal the difference will be, and how much oil the guitar will soak in before it actually forms a surface.

PS, given the nature of my finish, I quite expect it to be one of the heavier amounts of paint seen here, thus far.

Hi Andy: wow, that oil is really making your stripes go faster! It's really coming out great, isn't it? Don't remember if it has been stated: are you doing an oil finish on the neck too? A la Musicman? Many people find that gives an especially good feel to the back of a neck...

Carry on - but watch it with that beer! We know where that particular brew can lead... :!:  :D

Meant to ask about that before; you're in the book biz are you, Nutter? So's my wife, though at a different stage of the process.

Do I have the timing right? You're leaving Germany shortly before the Frankfurt Book Fair? Very, very wise, judging by my one visit: Lord, that's a scary event! My wife has been going every year for - longer than we'll mention. She gets home wrecked and ragged a week later, and it was only after many years that it turned out her sister had misunderstood and thought she was doing an intensive submersion course at the Oktoberfest each autumn. The only explanation she could think of for the wrung out state my Missus would be in afterwards...

Yup, you got every point right on that post. The skill of deduction, Mr. Watson! ;) Correct, I trained & worked as a bookseller and am now on the verge of living a fool's (or a Nutter's  ) life. Fool because I quit a steady job, and am leaving all behind on a quest not even beknown to my innermost self. It might have something to do with the horrors of the Frankfurt Messe, which I too find quite disturbing. Although in my "rank" I probably have a much more relaxed day in comparison to someone in the publishing business. They cook up the hard boiled deals in those hotel & conference rooms, I grant you that. In my line of work X-mas time is the worst, and maybe that's when publishers relax a bit; retail is buzzing and of course ALWAYS FRIENDLY even if some people act like they're absolute nutters! 8)
Please pass on my sympathies to Mrs. Ceri for having to go to Frankfurt this year. I really don't miss it.

cheers

-Nutter

PS: maybe mentioned before, but I'm leaving on Wednesday, any beer whishes, Mr Ceri? I'm on four wheels so space ain't a problem! email: ] regards!

Yeah, Me too! I made sure right at the start that the once the arm rest was done the grain would curve into the body.

Image

If i'd used the other side of the blank it would have curved out towards the edge, which IMO isn't quite as ascetically pleasing.

Unfortunately I used up all my “oiling a naked body” gags up in Kozys thread!

Twelvebar wrote:

Eeeek! No, I totally forgot to plonk it on the scales! My bad. I'll make sure it gets weighed before it gets put together. I have a feeling that its going to be one Big “Heavy” strat body! :D

Ceri wrote:

A nice idea, but the neck came ready finished and already feels great so i'm going to leave it as it is. While we're on the subject of the neck I just love the birds eye figuring on that fret board. A very nice specimen IMO.

Thanks again everyone.....I've gone all shy....again

I'll be back in a few hours with the first part of the wiring update for ya. Should be a good'un! :D

Enjoy!

Andy,

Great work. I can't wait to see this beauty with all the layer of finish! A friend of mine has been following the exploits of the build threads on the forum and has elected to order a unfinished mahogany strat body with the intent to produce an oil-style finish such as the one you've created here.

Along side the other fine craftsmens at this site, you sir are an inspiration!

Kozy :D
