Very nice....and that is one big-hairy-round-file! Wow..... the laminate looks very cool and with a finish the grain will really pop out.

Mr N, thats my favorite mug and was filled with some seriously strong coffee at the time. Brave New world is a good read but IMO Huxleys best work was "Island". A great read and well ahead of it time.

thanks, will order one tomorrow. Unfortunately it's not a Penguin but a Random House UK publication, so it won't go with your mug!

thanks for the tip!

Wow Andy!!!

That came out great. I'm impressed. Nice homemade caul to hold the veneer.

Great work. 8) 8)

I continue to blown away by this build. Andy this is some quality work and is going to be one beautiful guitar. That headstock is boss. Respect.

You've got me thinking of building my own body from scratch. Which is strange since I've never even wielded a router. I probably will not build anything as intricate as your build here, mind you, but I think I may be able to pull off a Tele.

I'm currently on the search for some interesting lumber. Between craigslist and freecycle, I'm confident I'll be able to find some interesting source of wood if I bide my time. Trying to think outside the box, looking for damaged furniture, or barn wood, or home demolition...

Looking great andy :)

The veneer on the headstock is quite expertly done, definitely deserve that beer.

Any, quick question. By adding the veneer to the headstock, will that now cause the tuners to be a bit short on the side they protrude? (string side) :?:

Howdy!

Thanks for all the kind words people (or lack of, Ceri & Nick!)

Good stuff! My copy is an old Flamingo – Harper Collins Publication and they don't do mugs either. Looks like Penguin are ahead of the game on that one!

Do it! With your skills I reckon you'd do a stunning job mate. At the stage your at with your Tele you could make some templates for a later project. Just make sure you get someone to show you how to handle a router first. Seriously, its a scary bit of kit.

Good question X Man. I reckon it will be fine as the veneer is very thin and once its been grain filled and sanded ready for finishing it will be no more than 1mm thick. But lets have a quick look anyway shall we? :D

Machine Heads / Tuners

I'm using a set of black staggered locking tuners made by Sperzel.

Image

Image

By using staggered tuners I won't need to use any string trees to get the desired break angle over the nut to the tuners. Here's difference in height between the posts

E and A strings - 24mm
D and G strings - 23mm
B and E strings - 22mm

Right then, first we need to mark out the locating pins....

Image

...then drill them out.

Image

Then we can loose fit them to check and make sure there's no issues.

Image

Image

And lets have a closer look at the staggering...

Image

...and the B and E string posts

Image

I reckon that's just about perfect! :D

More soon!

Enjoy!

Howdy!

Thanks again for the posts folks. Tis much appreciated

X man, that was a quality post! :D :D :D :D :D

Another little Update for today.

Final Sanding.

The body has now been grain filled. We showed how that was done with the test pieces so I shan't bother going over that again. So we can move straight on to the final sanding.

The prep work we do now is very very important as the final sanding for a natural oil finish will dictate how well the overall finish will turn out. The woods surface must be as perfect as we can get it. All tool marks, dings and scratches (no matter how small) must be removed as these will really show up once the oil is applied and we don't what that do we? Every now and then I'd catch a finger nail on the body and would have to re-sand that area all over again. Its hard work but put the time in and you'll reap the benefits later. :D

Image

Image

I've spent a serious amount of time preping the body and have gone through all seven different grades of sand paper I posted in an earlier update, finishing with P1200 fine paper. You can actually hear when the body is ready to move to the next grade of sand paper as the the tone of your sanding changes.

Once the body is totally silky smooth to touch it gets cleaned several times with spirit to remove all the sanding dust.

The following pics show just how smooth and shiny the body surface has become.

Image

The headstock has received the same treatment.

Image

Looks nice, doesn't it? :D

Tomorrow I'll be applying the first coat of Danish Oil. I'll briefly cover that in another little update but there won't be a great deal to add as we've already gone through the process with the test pieces. So I reckon while we wait for the oil to harden a bit we'll move on to something a bit more interesting.

The next proper Update will be all about the Big Hairy Wiring Diagram and associated cool stuff! :D

More soon.

Enjoy!

Can't say enough how cool this is :) that body is shining pre-oil, it's gonna look amazing (it already does!).

Kudos on the great work.
