As always, plenty of quality filler whilst we wait, but I need to ask the question:

Hows it going andy?

This whole thread, and more importantly the username of the author has me thinking about a few things.

Namely this bloke (all dogs are blokes)

Image

(the four legged friend)

Now he sheds a hell of a lot of hair. Infact he loses his outer coat twice a year.

Should it all be collected to make a Big Hairy Strat?

Howdy!

Thanks for the posts people! Very entertaining.

Some fine looking beasts on display! Nick mate i reckon you could make just about anything Big and Hairy with that mighty pooch you have there! :D

Sorry about the delay in getting this Update sorted but I've been working 12-14 hour shifts for the last couple of weeks and am now absolutely shattered. So just a little post for today.

Making a Pickguard

Right then to business!

I've dismantled my white partscaster (for various reasons) which allows me to use its pickguard as template to make an MDF template, which we can then customise to to our needs.

Image

I've roughly cut out the shape in MDF with the jig saw and attached the pickguard.

Image

Oooh, have I mentioned how handy the Big Hairy Router Table is? Well, its very handy indeed! I've used a few nuts as spacers so the pickguard is raised to make good contact with the router cutter.

Image

I'm pretty much using the same method I used to make the perspex Strat plates....

Image

….which gives us a nice accurate template to work from.

Image

I'm going for a HSS config but I don't want a big square hole for the humbucker. So using the pickguard I've made myself a humbucker template by simply lining up to single coils side by side and cutting them out with the router. Then we attach the HB template on top of the MDF pickguard and route that out....

Image

….so that we end up with this....

Image

Cool! Now we have our pickguard template we can start hacking up the black 3 ply pickguard blank

Image

I've made a copy of the MDF template so I can make a kind of MDF sandwich with the pickguard in the middle. We'll find out why in a bit.

Image

Back to the router for some more template action!

Image

Image

Now here's why we have a pickguard sandwich.

Image

I could have used double sided tape to attach the pickguard to the MDF plate but I just don't trust the stuff and If I'd used screws they would have to be counter sunk flush with the face of the pickguard and we don't want a load of over sunk screw holes. So to bevel the edge the sandwich was the way to go. It also makes it a bit easier to view the cutter height.

Once the edge is bevelled we drill out all the necessary holes and counter sunk the pickguard screw holes. To make the 5 way switch slot I used a tiny drill bit to make a few holes in line then pushed the jig saw blade through to cut the slot. Job done! :D

Image

Not bad! The plastic cover is still on at the moment which is why it looks a bit tatty around the edges in the above pic but all in all that worked out very well indeed. :D

Now I'm going to have a beer and then lie down....Soooo tired....

More soon!

Enjoy!

I can see it now ... a fuzzy Strat to rival the ZZ Top fuzzy Deans from ages ago ...

They really have a nice set design with the way the amps are laid out.... the guitars are a bit, ummmm, but they have Maple necks! Wow, never seen an Explorer (or a Explorer mod with a Marauder type headstock) with maple necks before! Ya, Nutter, those tuners are gross!

Watch that video carefully...I think they are performing to canned music!! The bass and guitar stuff does not match up perfectly with the the music.

Howdy!

Thanks for the vid Mr N. I enjoyed that as I greedily necked a couple of San Miguels before me and Randel had a little power nap:D

[Ahem....] And what gave you that idea X man?

Mind you, a set of WeaponX pups in this Strat would be very cool. More on that later. :D

Another little Update for ya today.

The Neck

Now the pickguard is sorted we can reveal what type of neck we're going to use.

I'm using a 22 fret Birds Eye Maple Mighty Mite Strat Neck.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Nice, isn't it? I bought the neck before anything else and trust me, it looks very cool with the body. That inlay was the best mistake....ever! :D

Head Stock Veneer.

I'm really sorry about the total lack of visual stimuli for the next bit but I had a minor camera malfunction so we lost a days worth pics. My bad.

As mentioned in the last guessing game won by Kozy, I'm going to use some of the mahogany veneer to cover the head stock. Bit like some of the FSR Strats I've seen with matching headstocks.

Image

I laid the headstock on top of the veneer and drew round it, then cut out the shape with a craft knife. I then steamed the nut end of the veneer over the kettle spout and bent the end over a rolling pin to make a curve to match the transition from headstock to fretboard. I then keyed the face of the headstock with some P180 sand paper and then glued and clamped the veneer onto the head stock using a piece of timber I'd cut to match the headstock curve.

The following 3 pic's were staged after the veneer was attached so you can see what I did.

Image

Image

Image

Once the glue had dried carefully sanded the protruding edges of the veneer flush with the headstock and then slightly bevelled the edge. I then set about locating the truss rod adjusting nut. I did this by poking a small hole with a tiny drill bit and then slowly made the hole wider with a craft knife until the hole was big enough for me to use a rolled up piece of sand paper to widen it to the desired width.

Image

Personally, I reckon that's a tidy bit of work right there folks. Very smug about that. :D

Image

I did the same for the machine head holes except once the hole was big enough I finished them off with a round file.

Image

Job done! :D

Image

Image

I'm very pleased with how that worked out as I've not done this sort of thing before and am usually content with a plain old headstock. See what you people make me do. :D

For that I'm rewarding myself with another bottle of the Harveys Blue Label. Good stuff!

More soon!

Enjoy!

What spoteth my trainéd bookseller's eye?
Penguin merchandise? Great book - frightening but more or less realistic I'd say! :)

Again, very nice bit of progress there, Sir!
I am sure the veneer will shine alight once it's buffed! Cool!

keep it up

Thanks guys!

Nick. Not kidding mate, I surprised myself on that one!

Mr N, thats my favorite mug and was filled with some seriously strong coffee at the time. Brave New world is a good read but IMO Huxleys best work was "Island". A great read and well ahead of it time.

Cheers
