I think these build threads should be warts and all affairs.

After all you'll learn from mistakes the chance to learn from someone elses mistakes is a boon too.
We're all human and we all make em.

Hi Goranm! Hehehe! There's a couple of good reasons for me choosing that avatar. The headstock on this build will have a mahogany veneer to make it look like “My” avatar.( ) And you are one of the few others that use it! Needless to say that whether its you or me that's posting, that avatar has become synonymous with quality. I'm sure you'll agree. :D

Going back to when I drilled the screw holes for the vintage bridge on Frank, I got out of that deal without drilling through the spring cavity, only to pound a dowel clean through prior to the redrill.

Didn't feature that boo-boo in my thread considering I was kinda

Hahaha! That made me chuckle and believe it or not I was laughing my arse off when I plunged a size 10 drill bit through mine. I honestly found the hole thing hilarious!

It would be great to come across as this all knowing super being but as Nikininja rightly said, many others may benefit from my big hairy mistakes. Besides we get extra points for sorting it out afterwards

I am nothing but an enthusiastic amateur who's is still learning all the time. I've made a few bodies before this but believe it or not I only got my first guitar building book last month! So pretty much everything you see here has come from the internet and trial and error and more error. For a bit of a laugh here's a pic of my first ever body I made about 5 years ago. Ambitious don't you think?

It worked though. (Some toes there to satisfy Orvilleowners foot fetish!) Quality! :D

Right then back to that drink!

I have decided to call it the “Bloody Scary Hairy Mary” !!!:D

I too am quite surprised to find that once the smoke had cleared the final colour is quite visually appealing. Now the taste test.

[Andy downs the glass in one.....]

Wow! That's fantastic.... wait a minute....humm interesting after taste....Oh bollocks.... I hate Marmite...

[Andy makes it to the bathroom just in time to pull a technicolour yawn]

Oh well, you got to try these things. No worse than Sam Adams. Lucky for me I have a good stock of my regular beverage of choice...

Enjoy!

Yep, that's pretty much what I thought too when I saw the contents of that glass.

Does it have a purplish tinge? Meths?

Andy I think your fears about your post holes is a case of being your own worst critic. These are hardly Swiss watches, you are well within an acceptable margin for error. If the bridges needed to be so precise you wouldn't be able to adjust them.

I'll echo what nik says about pilot holes. I do pilot holes for any bigger drilling. one trick is to run the bit in reverse, to center it, then stop and run forward to drill. I always use tape for a depth marker, I have a fear that those screw on depth stops will slip. unless of coarse you have an industrial drill press (pillar drill for you old-worlders,) with a depth setting. Actually my small drill press has a nice depth adjustment, it's just too bad , like ceri says, it doesn't have a big enough throat to use it on most projects i could really benefit from using it!!

Ceri asked where all the beer went, looking at Randel's tummy i can hazard a reasonable guess!

This is a pretty big tool supplier where Andy, Nick and I live. And yet this is one of the few pillar drills they do with a throat big enough to reach to the middle of a Strat:

http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-jet-jdp- ... rod362517/

OK, it's not impossibly expensive: £314 / US$485 / Can$514. But there's so much else I'd prefer to spend the money on, and I'm hard pressed for somewhere to put this drill. And it's not like there's much else I need it for that my smaller one won't do.

Ho-hum...

Cheers - C

Well Andy...if I were drinking I would toast to that! :D 8)
Kidding! But, I like your point. It sure is great when someone finds your work helpful.
Oh, and what a great avatar that is, a!? Great headstock! That's why I chose it! :D

Can't wait for your next installment.

Cheers! (drinking milk! 8) )

Eeeek!

Sorry about that folks! It’s an old exam desk that has some messages from the early 70's on it! I promise to check my pics for non-family friendly content in future!

P.S It was Listerine with some purple sprinkles Mrs Bighair added :D

From Teignmouth High School? Damn, I thought I recognised it - that's my old desk! :|

...Can we have a clearer photo, please? There's bits that I tantalizingly can't quite read.

Hey Andy, thanks for the brand new episode of "Cats, Holes & Beer" (now that sounds wrong... hmm. Maybe scratch it). Anyway, took some time today to update myself on your thread and am hoping to see even more progress soon! It's turning out so well, and if one imagines the body with that nice Danish Oil finish... I will stop now lest I start drooling. It looks great!

I wonder how it will sound like. I have always wanted to have or modify a mahogany body with different tone woods like alder or ash, maple and the likes. Is there any significant change in resonance since you put the block in? I mean maybe it sounds lighter or louder or whatever when you knock on it or tap it or whatnot, dunno, just an esoterical idea

Anyhow, keep it up!

P.S.: Hi Randel!

So what kind of concoction did you put together out of all of this?

I hope you didn't actually use all of that!

But he's a real killer with the microphone and stars on one of my old recordings as "Purring Charly & the Finger Picks"

He says hello to Randel. But he won't share his cat food. No Sir.

Hi Andy! Just stopped by to drop off some scones for everyone while we're patiently awaiting the next report. Sadly I didn't add anough gunpowder to make them rise, they're a bit flat but taste good nonetheless. Enjoy!
