Howdy!

Thanks guys!

Twelvebar, love the concept. Let me know what name you go with and I'll change it over. I like “Canadian Special” Tis a good name. 8)

Ceri, Cheers! I bet a wee drab of the “Cornish Mutiny” Slips down like a wet sock in a well oiled sea boot (for want of a better nautical phrase)! Thanks for that man, very cool! :D

The last time I used Brummer Grain filler was on a strat body I attempted to re-finish. It was a much lighter colour (can't remember which) and I didn't use a damp rag afterwards so had to sand the chunky excess off once it was dry. Once you've already sanded a body once to have to start all over again is a real pain in the backside. Glad I got it right this time. I agree its a great product and like you said, totally usable (with the right method  )

Finishing Test – Continued

I was up for work ridiculously early today so I was able to get in three coats today. And I listed my drying time incorrectly on the last post. With the 50/50 mix drying times are almost halved. As the mix becomes more pure the re-coat time increases until it becomes best to leave it 24 hrs between the final coats.

Here's what they look like after three coats

Image

Humm...not much of a difference from yesterday really and its not the pics as they don't look a great deal different in the real world.

Here's a wet shot of them with the fourth coat applied with a roughly 70% oil 30% spirit

Image

The Tung oil, straight out of the can was much thicker than the Danish and thus is going on thicker but once dry I can't say there is much of a difference.

Image

I reckon the Danish, though thinner, has slightly more shine to it....but we'll see once they've had a few pure coats.

More on this tomorrow!

Package from the U.S.

I got a text from Mrs Bighair today and this was what it was about...

Image

A certain forum user I've been in contact with off the forum has done me a great service! Lets just call them "Mr X" for now

But Me & Randel the Cat are going to make you wait until later to reveal the seriously cool goods inside! Much more on that later.

Enjoy!

Andy

It looked to me the tung oil was penetrating the wood better but that may be the applicator hitting the end of the test board.

WHATS IN THE ENVELOPE!?!?!?! The suspense is killing me! (and I only just saw it).

In regards to the oil, I believe that Tung Oil looks fantastic already. Just looks like it brings out more of a deepness in the grain, especially that grown streak from the top right, about 25% in from the right.

Now it's all probably to do with the offcuts you're using, but my vote so far would be Tung Oil

Dan

PS If any of you are following the Australian Election, then you'll know that my vote doesn't mean much of anything at the moment. But I guess we're now in the same boat as the UK.

Well I simply can't think of a better nautical phrase! I've learnt some good expressions here on the Forum - and yours ain't the only one concerning boots!

Ah, but no! The whole point (far as I'm concerned, anyhow) of that waterbased Brummer filler is that you can re-activate it with the damp cloth anytime. Go back a week later, decide there is slightly too much grain filler left on the surface and just take the damp cloth to it and lift a little more off. Or take it all off. Or add some more - whatever you wish. It lends itself SO MUCH better to tiny, painstaking adjustments than the oilbased sort. A totally ace product! :D

I think the crucial difference is that the Danish oil is "food safe"; isn't that it? So you can use your guitar as a kitchen surface secure in the knowledge that you won't be poisoning your guests: so vital in the modern music world.

Ooo - I bet I know who "Mr X" is. I expect you don't want me to name him yet - so how do I get my 50 Forum Points?

Now. Regarding this:

Hi Dan: yes, we are following your election. I absolutely don't do party politics here, but I can make one observation from our recent experience over here.

After your politicians finally cobble together whatever coalition you end up with those in power will then take ever opportunity to tell you it is what the electorate have voted for. When in fact whatever you voted for it wasn't this - simply because it wasn't on the ballot paper. Maybe you'd have voted for it if you could and maybe you wouldn't. The point is: nobody did.

But politicians always have to feel they are in place with a sacred mandate from the people. I expect Robert Mugabe, Husni Mubarak and Hu Jintao all honestly believe they're there to the wholehearted delight of their loving populace.

The little dears...

Quick; we need cats on this post. The other night Stephen Fry was saying that humans are unique in being the only creature that can sleep on its back. Twaddle:

Image

Randel is always up for a power nap.....

Image

Now i'm just over 6ft 1" tall and as you can see above Randel, though not quite Mainecoon size, is not excatly a small cat!

i think it's near impossible to pull off a Strat build without a cat helping you.

Yes. You are correct and are now Randel favorite 8)

Randel likes the idea of using the body as a novelty Sushi board but has reliably informed me that "Sandwich Jazz" was a less than note worthy blip in modern music

Twelvebar wrote:

I totally agree, though there are exceptions to the rule...

Finishing Test – Continued....some more.

Again, I was up very early for work so I've managed two more coats today (70/30 mix). Ok I fully appreciate that this is probably getting a bit boring now but I'm keen to show how easy it is to apply this type of finish in as close to real time as this type of thread will allow. Three days, 6 coats that each take seconds to apply, and we have something that looks like this...

Image

The pic above, though a little dark, shows us that the Danish Oil has noticeably more shine than the Tung Oil. Worth mentioning at this point that the Danish smells better than the Tung oil....smell is important right? And just in case your wondering....they both taste the same.. ...(Just kidding...the Danish tastes way better, that's why Ceri uses it on his kitchen worktops  )

Now we can apply some pure coats.

Image

Without the spirit mixer we leave it for about 10-12 min before wiping off the excess as before, so we're left with this....

Image

I'm going to leave that to dry for 24 hours before applying another coat.

If all goes well tomorrow I'll give you all a break from the Finishing Testing and see if we can't get the bridge placement sorted out. Should be fun! :D

Enjoy!

Andy & Randel the Cat

which gives the better buzz? That's the real question!!!

nice work. I'll have to dig around, but I seem to remember seeing a project where someone actually made a guitar out of an old cutting board somewhere.
hopefully i can remember it and steal some pictures to post here.
