Thanks people! :D

You are all too kind! I'm gald your enjoying the posts!

That arm rest was a killer! I thought my hand was going to fall off! You can see in the pic bellow i had to use some tissue to pad the block plane as the plam of my right hand was starting to get sore!

Image

I'll definatly be recording something once this is all done! In fact I've recently sent some of my tunes to an old school friend who's hopfully going to lay some vocals over the top. She's given me good feedback so far. Looks promising!

I don't want to give away any spoilers so you'll have to wait and see what pups and pickguard I be using :D

I reckon i'm going to have to extend the control cavity to house some of the additional components the as the wiring I'm currently going with has out grown the existing one!

I'll also need to sort out the bridge placement at some point...still lots to do...Me and Randel need to sit down and sort out what order to do it in.

Thanks again

More soon!

Howdy!

I've bought all the bits and hardware now and it looks like I'm defiantly going to have to extend the control cavity a bit more to house all the cool stuff I've just ordered. :D

Hummm...Looks like next on the list is to make another cavity template.

Andy. I know all about doing that forearm contour. It's a royal pain of a task and you've made it look like butter! These days I have a (homemade) jig for doing it with the router: by hand it is a pig of a job. Kudos to you.

And more kudos for doing the belly cut and making it seem so painless. I can't think how that could be done with a router, so the horror of the hand job (...erm) followed by the sanding drum seems unavoidable. Yet you made it appear easy!

How much will you charge to do those for me from now on? :D

Respect for this fella, Forum users!

Cheers - C

My first ever post here, so first of all: hello forum members! And especially: hello to all the fascinating and inspirational craftsmen and women out there - you're the reason I signed up - keep up the stellar work, folks, and a big THANK YOU for making a lad a great big fat portion more knowledgeable! YOU ROCK!

I followed with rabid interest Sir Ceri's last show, keeping silently to the rear and, quite fidgety, enjoying the process from a back seat.
Discovery of this new build threat (by obviously the South East's most finest craftsman AndyBigHair) thus endangered my health so, the only remedy was the sign-up; enabling now these feeble attempts to utter a general avalanche of stammered general gratefulness.

(You have now reached the end of the ramble and may release your seat-belts.)

Best of luck for your current project, Andy! And for the Strat! ;-) It's coming on great!

Bye for now says:

The Nutter.

Well well. I'm out of town, but soon as I'm back perhaps I can post a picture or two that might surprise and amuse you in that direction. For sure, there will be those out here in cyberspace reeling in horror at the idea of Viking hats with horns on them. Oh dear oh dear! :D

What!?! Vikings without horny hats!?! Your kidding, right? Well this is news to me and Randel. Defiantly need some evidence of that! :D

All right. Well I'm not sure this is wise, but...

Here's what the well turned out Viking Axeman (axeman - geddit?) wears on his bonce (actually, this is slightly pre-Viking - but what's a century or two between friends?). Note: no horns in sight:

Image

I hesitate to mention it, but that item was made by... me. Immediately I must make it clear that I am not a re-enactor, though I've met several and they are charming folk with much interest in beer. That and other such pieces were made as props for a project - which we don't need to go into here:

Image

Anyone ever watched the extras features on the Lord of the Rings DVDs, about the guys making maille coats for the actors? Plastic and superglue - I ask you! What you see here is real metal ring maille, and several thousand links of it just on a small section like that. Also made by me. I made a matching maille shirt too. 22,000 links. Think doing tummy contours on Strats is tedious work? Try butt joined ring maille - sheesh...

Eat your heart out, Weta Workshop...!

Now. C'mon Andy: back to guitar building.

Cheers - C

Howdy!

Thanks for all you kind words people! Your a nice bunch aren't cha! :D

Mr C, Dude! Nice job. Me and Randel stand corrected (though we reckon it would look cooler with horns!) Pics of you in your full battle regalia next time please!

I don't know what everybody else thinks but I reckon I know who the Most Interesting Man In The World likes to go for a beer with. Ceri, next time you see him, Say “Hi” from me and Randel

Nutter, Y Tu and HustlePT, Welcome to the Forum! Stick around, I've got some seriously cool stuff to show later in the build.

Chapter (5) Sanding

Work has been proper bonkers recently so I've had very little time to work on the body so just a little update for you today.

Andybighair wrote:

Nope! I'm not going to need to do that now as I have found a way to fit everything in without having to munch more of the body out. Lets just say the wiring for this beast is...well...interesting to say the least. Anyway there's still lots to do before we come to that.

Me and Randel have now decided on the order of play. Before we can site the bridge we need to apply some grain filler, but before we fill the grain we need to sand out all of the tool marks the body has accumulated during the build. And there was a lot of them

Strictly no machine tools for this bit as I have found that with belt and orbital sanders its all to easy to remove too much and orbital sanders will leave tiny rings in the wood if your not careful. So sanding will all be by hand or with my sanding block.

Below is a chart of the different grades of sandpaper I'll be using.

Image

To get the body ready for grain filling I'll be using the P180 and 320 followed by the P240 fine.

Its very important that all scratches and router burns are completely removed as they will show up big time once the finish is a applied and look less than desirable. The worst areas were the insides of the horns. Lots to remove there.

Image

Its slow work but a great way to de-stress. After an 11 hour shift I do a bit of sanding as a way to relax and re- focus the mind. Its my Kung Fu replacement at the mo :D

Image

Still a lot of sanding to be done, which is quite boring for you good people following this thread. So why not check out some of the other quality build threads that are currently on the go. Here's two for a start....

Kozy is in the process of finishing his "Franken Stein-o-caster".Check out those Bill Lawrence pups!

Kozy's Fraken Stein-o-caster

And the Forums very own X man is building two seriously high spec Custom Strat's. If you want to see a true pro at work, thats the thread for you.

Xhefir's Two Custom Strat Plus Builds

More soon...

Enjoy!

Looking tasty Andy, my question is, whats happen to all the crazy antics of Randel the Cat? he been chowing down too much on the Cat mint?

We all know what happened the last time he did that. Maybe you should be watching behind you.....

HA! Randel the Cat is fine and fear not! Randel will make several visual appearances later on in the build. He's not a fan of this part. He finds sanding tool marks out awfully boring and has instead been proof reading my newly acquired guitar building literature as recommended by Ceri.

Image

Randel takes his role as Technical Director very seriously....and was not best pleased when I interrupted him to get a shot of the books...

Image

Probably best to leave him to it.

Chapter (5) Sanding – Continued

Just a little update to day and a little bit of fun at the end...

Well after a week participating in the Zen Art of Sanding I am now the cool calm centre of the Universe [deep breath in...and out]. I now know every inch of this body intimately

All the tool marks are now gone bar one....

Image

That nasty router has left my Strat with what I'm going to call a “birth mark”. I'm pretty sure all great guitars have one of those....Not sure if its worth asking Mike Eldred as I'm sure that's a top secret Custom Shop thing. :D

The rest of the horn areas have turned out well and they were by far the most awkward part to sand

Image

Image

Every thing else looks pretty good. Certainly ready to start grain filling before the final round of sanding takes place.....

Image

….though looking at that arm rest I might make the topside -arm rest transition a bit less abrupt

Image

Image

Image

Image

The next update will be on grain filling. What a treat! But until then, and to try and make this part of the build a bit more exciting... who fancies another little guessing game! :D

Andy & Randel's Big Hairy Guessing Game! No. 2

I thoroughly enjoy Alainfrance's guessing games and the last game me and Randel held here went down quite well with forum user Nikininja breaking his 10000 post silence to win the coveted 50 point prize.

Now its the same rules as last time. The application must be spot on and Me and Randel will be merciless with our clues.

Right then, a while back I mentioned that I'd be using some mahogany veneer at some point during the build.....

Image

I'm using it for two things, one of which there's very little chance of you guessing but the other is relatively more obvious.

So the first person to guess what I'm going to use it for gets 50 points! :D

Let the games begin!

Enjoy!

Andy,

Mindblowing work on the body, my friend! 8)

A STELLAR EFFORT!

Also, it's good to see cool cat Randel pitching in. I'll have to ask Maggs to put some hours in on my project :D

OK -- on the matter of your intent for those mahogany veneers...

How does Andy plan to kick it up a notch with mahogany veneers.... Hmmm....

Would he cap the top of the body?.... I don't think he would, looks too nice with the inlay.... Would he laminate the back?... Maybe... But I just don't think that's what it is...

I've given this some serious thought. I think Andy plans to use the veneers for...

A custom pick guard, spring cavity cover and battery cover!

(am I right?)
