Andy, I just love your methodology! Every mishap is an opportunity - and this guitar is going to be so much more interesting than it would have been without the router slip. Total respect!

Care to drop a pickguard over the front just to show us what the effect is going to be like when it's all done? Can't wait to see...

BTW: this is the first we've heard of Mrs Andybighair. Welcome, darlin'!

Amazing how many Forum user's better halves are suddenly cropping up round here at the moment. You; Mrs Kong-to-be - why, even Mrs Ceri was spotted in a photo not long ago. Perhaps we should have a readers' wives section of the website? It is truly becoming the "family friendly" place Brad always wanted...

Oh, one more thing. I'd be fascinated to know who's guitar building off-cuts that shop is collecting?

Carry on, fella. Stardom beckons!

Cheers - C

I'd hate to think what Randel will do to me if I mess up or try to quit again!

Yeah, I agree. It definitely looks cooler with the inlay than without (and I've read on the inter-web that stripes on a guitar will make you play faster!)

Regarding my methodology (I thought yout might like that  Credit due!), it does get a bit “hairy” at times! (Andy counts his fingers to make sure their still all there) I'm sure there are better ways to achieve my goal but with limited tools and funds I find that “necessity is the mother of invention” :D

I might well be able to slip a pic into the next update for you.

You got a winning smile from Mrs Andybighair for that! :D

She's had one mention as my girlfriend near the start where I complimented her on her far superior spelling skills! We've been together now for longer than we've been apart and although we're not married she prefers to be referenced here as Mrs Andybighair (though she has threatened to sign up with the user name "Guitar-Widow1". )

Snap! Once the body's finished I'll be taking it down to show him. I'll pick his brains on that and a few other things while I'm there.

Bloody hell! I best have a shave (no, not you Randel, just me)!

Enjoy!

Absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to see the finished product. I think this design may just one upped Ceri's last project. (No offense Ceri, you did an amazing job!)

No offense in the very slightest! :D

I'm the most uncompetitive person you will ever meet. My deepest pleasure is to see Andy and others flashing past leaving me spinning in their slipstream. Great guitars and great guitar building threads are all we care about here! 8)

Rock on - C

PS I'm surprised nobody's run with my "readers' wives" idea. So happens, when I was a kid there was a magazine called Forum. But I can't remember what it was all about.

Though I'm totally faltered by the lovely comments, I believe Mr C would do (and has done) a far better job of building and publishing a totally stonking thread! The man set the benchmark for quality here (IMO), and let’s not forget what he had to start with for his last build.

The mind boggles at the thought of what he’d do with a fresh slab of timber! :D

I reckon the majority of users prefer not to have their better half posting questions as to how we found time to build a guitar while the lower kitchen cupboard door is still not fixed.

For me this is a safe haven for guitar geek-ery! :D

Enjoy!

BAHAHAHA! Not that I remember Forum (;)) but something tells me most of us would get banned if we started posting a thread like that. Secondly, how many plymouths and tonics did you have before you posted the above :p

So we plummet from the lofty heights of strat building to voyeur publications

I'm glad this forum isn't like that Forum.

Now I'm off to put on my big overcoat and hat pulled down, and head out to the 2am library.

Howdy!

Botched Bridge Cavity Solution – Part 2

Bit more for you today.

With the inlay happily in palace we can re- rout the bridge cavity. I've put the topside cavity template back on and marked out the cavity ready for pre-drilling.

Image

I've drilled out most of the timber to make things a little easier for the router.

Image

With the router bit in place, checked, checked again.....routed for a bit....then checked again...routed some more. I also trimmed a tiny bit out of the bridge pup cavity and routed the back spring and trem block cavity.

Looks good!

Image

Image

Here's some before and after pics of the back trem cavity

Image

and after...

Image

Not bad. We did have a little router slip but I'm not really bothered. Too chuffed with the topside to care!

Image

Few! I can't tell you how good it feels to have got that sorted! All we need to do now to finish this side chapter is to trim the end of the inlay.

Back to the router table.

With the template cutter set up and ready to rock we trim the inlay flush with the body.

Image

We can only go so far before we need to swap out the router bit.

Image

A quick bit of sanding to remove a few little router burns and we're done!

Image

It now looks like it should..except with with some cool “go faster” stripes! 8)

Image

I'm really pleased with how this has turned out. Thanks again everyone for all your support and kind words throughout the router incident. "Yes, you too Randel, though we still need to have a little chat about you mind raping me. “Meow” Yeah well it may have been for my own good but now we've got trust issues"

Botched Bridge Cavity Sorted! Yeah! :D

Back to the schedule!

Chapter (4) Body Shaping

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was keen to get the routing out of the way before I loose a finger so while the router table is set-up we're going to round off the edges of the body.

I started of with a slightly smaller cutter to try a limit any more chunks flying out.

Image

I routed the top and bottom side without issue before swapping over to the larger cutter.

Image

No chunks to glue back in but we do have some savage router burns. These are caused but me being to cautious and slow passing the body across the router.

Image

These have to go. With some 180 fine sand paper it only takes 15min to remove the worst

Image

That's a bit better. That's us done with the router and the table now and I still have all of my fingers! Bonus! I'll still be using the table as a “thread prop” for general silliness and the odd message throughout the rest of the build :D ).

I've wiped over the body with a little bit of spirit to remove the sanding dust and this is where we're at...

Image

And here's a few shots with a pickguard as requested :D

Image

Image

Image

Just so you know that's a spare and is not going to be used on this build.

That's all I've got for today so time to kick back and relax.

In support of my local brewery.....Today I will mostly be drinking...

Image

Slurp...Aaahh! Not bad, not bad at all! :D

Cheers!

Next update Chapter (4) Body Shaping – Continued

Enjoy!
