Andy I'm thinking there's just enough wood there to make a really nice custom guitar stand with a walnut racing stripe... :D

Can we play 20 questions if I'm wrong?

Huh. Well I have no idea. :?

But just a friendly headsup: if we get to the end of this and you reveal that it is for a through-neck after all - you are going to get the same reaction from me my wife's nephew got when it turned out he was playing "I spy with my little eye something that actually begins with a different letter than the one I named."

Just so's you know... :D

Ok I'll break the 9999 mark with this one. (Sorry Mike they weren't falling for it)

This

Is going to be a John Diggins style center stripe to the body.

Like this (kind of)

Image

Your going to route the center of the body out, much like Ceri did on the burnt strat. Then insert that lump of lumber and re route the pickups, depth and thingies.

Betchya

That's kind of what I meant by another body,
But it is considered a neck though too...

Hehehe! :D

Congrats Nikininja! on reaching 10'000 + Quality posts mate!

But ,this little game was all Ceri's idea to lure you and Mike back out. After you didn't bite on the posts of his new amp he got desperate!

Back to the Game!

Now this is what I would call a thru-neck.

Image

A neck that “actually” runs through the body as one piece. Just so we're clear. (and to avoid being “clipped round the ear” by Mr C :D)

Sadly my piece is no way near long enough for that, so a thru-neck is not it's intended application. Also, I have already got a neck for this build.

Nope, but I will be making a stand later on :D

Yes...ish

Yes, I have the secret “TONE” formula, but it wasn't me that found it :D But this piece isn't used for that.

I think Nikininja is as close as anyone's going to get. He's very nearly, almost spot on but I'm not going to need to re-rout the pick up cavity's. He's pretty much got got the right look though. Not sure if its good enough for the points.....

Andybighair wrote:
I'll give the first Forum user 50 points if they can guess what I'm going to use this for....

Oh yeah, and you need to get the application right on to get them points people!

Give me the reason “why” I'd "need" to do it and the points are yours! Be specific. Come on, its easy now!

Enjoy!

Andy & Randel the Cat (P.S. No elderly neighbours were harmed in the making of the Strat. :D)

And the winner is......

NIKININJA!

Congrats! Consider yourself the proud recipient of a well earned 50 points!

I will indeed be using that piece as an inlay to cover the botched trem cavity. I got the piece back from my carpenter friend today so if all goes well I should have time next week to start working on it. I'll post an update soon.

That was a fun little game, wasn't it? :D

Enjoy!

As an inlay? Wow - I must be seeing that picture wrong. What dimensions are that lump of wood, please? To my eye in the photo it looks as thick as the body itself... no?

This is shaping up very interesting: I can't wait to see the next stage. Plenty of pix during that "inlay" process, if you please sir!

Howdy Mr C,

I'll fill you in on my little plan.

The piece in the pic was 420mm long x 64mm wide x 35mm thick.

Image

You asked about those lines? In order to cover the trem hole I needed to do the following:

1) Reduce the thickness to 25mm
2) Trim one side of the maple off (as marked out in the pic)
3)Cut the piece in half and then glue the two pieces together.

I don't have the skills or the right tools to make a decent enough cut and planing birds-eye maple is tricky. That's where my carpenter friend comes in. He very kindly carried out the above for me and it now looks like this.

Image

It's now 204mm long x 97mm wide x 25mm thick (Its needs to be this thick so when I come to carve out the arm rest I don't go all the way through the inlay).

I'm going to make a router template then rout out from the edge of the bridge pup cavity all the way past the edge of the body and insert/inlay the piece. If you look on the last pic of the body you'll see the rough lines for this draw in pencil. I'll then trim the edge flush with the body and re-rout the topside bridge cavity. Then we can return to my planned schedule :D

If all goes well it should turn my botched cavity into a decorative feature, could look quite cool! 8)

I'll defiantly take plenty of pics this time. Despite having a thread plan (yes, I'm that sad), once I get started I get so engrossed that forget that I'm supposed to be sharing the process. I'm still very new at this whole build thread business!

So, what cha think?

Enjoy!
