Or combining a couple of those, how about pictures of cats with big hair?

BTW: there's A LOT of weird cat pictures out there in Google Land...!

LOL Ceri!

Please tell me you know that picture is, in fact, of a rabbit. Or rather, ahem, a hare with big hair. ;)

Hi ORCRiST: all I'm saying - "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it..."

Top Cat in a Top Hat if you will - you guys remember that cartoon?

Speaking of which, seeing as you're all Brits - I used to watch Danger Mouse as a kid, I call my friend Penny 'Penfold' - and it's always confused her, lol.

My word I caught a rerun of Dangermouse a few years back. I loved the cartoon as a kid. Looking at it 20 odd years later all I could think was, this is embarrasingly camp.

It was camper than a row of tents.

Baron Greenback was a big cat fan wasn't he?

Howdy!

I'm thoroughly enjoying all your hilarious posts! Very entertaining. So much so that I'm going to keep this Update all business.

Chapter (3) Cavity Routing (& some repairs)

Now before we start any more routing we need to make sure we don't have another “incident” like last time so this is my solution.

Image

This way there is no chance for the collars to slip out. The large silver collar is what sits inside the router (for those who aren't familiar with the inner workings of routers). To be honest, I'll be glad when we're done with the router. Although I've got a lot of router time under my belt its still a bloody scary bit of kit (as mentioned by Ceri and 12bar). It's even worse on the table because all there is between you and the spinning blade of doom is a piece of wood! I'm looking forward to moving over to hand tools which I'm much more comfortable with.

Anyway, on to the cavity routing. I can assure you all I was dressed up like a Power Ranger whilst carrying out the following :D ....

With the router placed on top we munch out the trem cavity. All good, no problems to report.

Image

I've made another couple of top-side cavity templates to replace the botched set that were unceremoniously binned. One perspex and one MDF. I very quickly painted the MDF one as a visual aid for the pic's. The pickup and control cavities were made with the router on top. The neck slot was made using the router table to help maintain a nice level rout. The neck I have fits it perfectly! Everything went well with no serious incidents and I still have all my fingers, which is nice :D

Image

I got the chisles out to tidy the control cavity (just down from the bridge pup cavity) Nice and neat.

Image

We did have a little split out (as seen below) But I managed to salvage a chunk and stick that back in

Image

The remaining gap was filled with wood filler.

Image

Job done. On to he outstanding repairs to the body edges we saw in the last post.

I stuck the piece I saved back with some wood glue mixed with a tiny bit of water then left it over night before sanding it back. I've repeated the pics from the last post for an easy comparison. Here's the first one

Before...

Image

And after...

Image

Not bad if I do say so myself! The remaining small chip will disappear when I round the edges of the body later.

The next one's not so simple. I mixed some of the remaining “Tone Compound” (mahogany sanding dust) with some wood glue and used that to shallow fill the hole. Once that had hardened I used the router to round off the edge to give me an idea of what would still be visible.

Before...

Image

And after....

Image

I'm going to leave this for now and try to cover it over when I reach the grain filler stage as I don't want a nasty yellow wood filler mark at the end of this! Its much more shallow than it looks in the pics.

So this is what we're left with...

Back...

Image

And front...

Image

As I mentioned earlier I have an experienced furniture maker visiting on Monday to discuss my plans for the botched bridge cavity so I'll unveil my plan after that.

That all I've got for now. More next week! .

Andy good show my friend,....good show. Brilliant rout and fill.
Fantastic recovery.
It really is comming along well. I love how you routed out the templates, I will add that to my tricks when I get up the guts to attempt a full build!

As for the beer ....I am not a big Sam Adams fan. I don't feel it is a fair representation of American beers. JMHO. I feel there are far better beers made here that cover palate well. Stone Breweries IPA's....I favor the Ruination IPA or the Double Bastard. :D
If you get a chance to try them... these are made here in my city.

Again great job Andy.-N 8)

Andy I think you will be fine, as you move on to final shaping, you'll be removing most of that anyway.

Nice work. it's good to keep a healthy respect for you power tools.

Hi Andy:

Ha! I'd been privately wondering how you'd do the cavities in multiple descending passes with only the thin perspex template. The extra MDF one answers that - neat! :D And did you do the same thing on the back, or just go in full depth straight away?

My solution to that particular router blade issue is to simply use two or three locking collars. And re-tighten everything constantly - blades coming loose in the chuck is another method of abruptly wrecking a piece...!

Presumably the problem with the bridge cavity is that you've lost the overhang that would normally mean the opening on the front is smaller than the cavity beneath - is that it? Firstly: does it matter? If you put the bridge in place is it leaving an unsightly gap visible behind the bridge? If not, then hey, forget it.

If there is a gap that you don't like then there's nothing for it but to use wood from an off-cut from the blank to carve a little section to fit in there - no?

Or alternatively you could build up that spot with a series of small strips of veneer. I did that at the curved end of the neck pocket on this body, (botched by someone else):

Image

And on the same body I rebuilt the badly routed pickup cavities in the same way, with layers of veneer:

On this thread:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=17948

(BTW, I can point you at several veneer suppliers if it's of use. Though I expect you have that covered.)

Obviously, that means you can't have a transparent finish because by either method you'll never get the grain to match invisibly. Remind us, what finish did you have planned for this job? Whatever: there's all kinds of impressive non-transparent ways to go with the lacquer - so no disaster!

You're recovery gluing in that bit of tearout on the edge is excellent, by the way. Completely invisible. Kudos to you! 8)

Many more questions, but maybe that's enough for now. And lest we get too serious perhaps I can add to the cat pix? I've splattered yesterday's practice amp purchase elsewhere on the Forum so why not here too? With the Racing Green livery it is camoflaged in the garden. They can hear it but they just can't see where it is...

Image

Carry on the brilliant work, man!

:D - C
