Howdy!

Thank you's

Thank you all for the posts of support, encouragement, and pic's of seriously disturbed felines. It would appear that Texas may well be my spiritual home!.

Update

Well, its been couple of weeks so I think I owe you good people an update! Here's what's been happening...

With the excess wood removed with the jig saw we attached the template and moved on to the router table. Now to not over stress the router I'd made some thicker MDF templates which were removed as I worked my way round.

Image

So we end up with something like this. Its still very rough but its starting to look pretty sexy.

Image

Image

But despite my efforts, we still had some of the worst split-outs I've ever had. This is not a problem as I saved the piece that flew out so that it can be glued back in.

Image

This one however will need to be filled as the router turned the splintered piece into “Tone Compound” (which is as we speak being shipped out to Eric Johnson who sprinkles this on his cornflakes in the mornings :D ) Bit of a pain but nothing we can't deal with.

Image

Dodgy Bits & Kitty Crack

Now here is where it all starts to go a bit “Pete Tong”

I made a start on the cavity routing and had a router bit malfunction. The grub screw that holds the collar on the router bit came loose and as I was routing the topside brigde cavity it came out and munched through the template into the wood.

Image

The above pic shows the offending router bit still with the melted plastic from the template attached

Totally gutting, as the damage would not be hidden by the bridge. I couldn't bare looking at the botched cavity so before I took any pics (sorry about that) I routed it flush with the rear cavity (a bit like Kong's Drowned Strat before the second bridge cavity fill, which he did very nicely I might add) with a plan to scaf in a piece to cover the damage. But this would still be clearly visible behind the bridge. Very upsetting. I think I have a way round it but.....

To make matters worse.....

Me and Randel have had a bit of a falling out over the above incident and his growing Cat Mint problem. I'll fill you in.

At Randel's request I planted some Cat Mint in the garden a few years back. Although its purple flowers have a certain ascetic quality, it also has some strange and unpredictable effects on Randel. Below is evidence of Randel the Cat feeding his seasonal habit.

Image

Ever since he's been back on the “Mint” weird stuff has been happening. I've not been feeling to good and along side a new savage craving for tuna, I've been having strange dreams......

Anyway without Randel on-board I can't see me continuing with.....

That's a bit odd......sorry

I don't think I'll cont....whoa.....with this thread …..

Man I feel really weird.....

Image

What the funk.... need to steady myself....

Image

Whoa......

Image

I hear music.......Pink Floyd?

Image

“Ted Nugent?, Nah never met him, but I know a guy who used one of his shirts to go Hang-gliding”...

Image

THUMP!

Image

Next post.....

Andy, man: don't you recognise the signs? Mate, I think you're pregnant.

Sorry if that's a shock.

...

... ...

... ... ...

But seriously. I can hardly bear to look at that picture of the router bit. We have ALL been there - ouch! When stuff goes wrong with router cutters it all happens so fast, doesn't it? Violent machines...

I feel certain you will find a way through and conquer it. And if not - well, from your illustrations it seems you have a career producing '60s TV classics ahead of you. Weird - but why not?

This thread is lots of fun! :D :D :D

Cheers man - C

I am always relieved when router problems only result in damage to wood, and no one is hurt.

Ceri are you suggesting that his dreams point to Randall slipping him a mickey, and the stork will be delivering a litter of big haired kitties soon?!?!?!?

Image

as to the classic TV stuff, Andy is in real trouble if Randall starts only calling him 'Number 6'

Hey Andy, Please show us how you do your repairs as they are as important in this process as when the build go smoothly. I hate that feeling in the gut when something gets chewed up.....but a guy told me that, we are only as good as a builder by how well we can fix our mistakes.... :-)

He he he!

That last update was lots of fun wasn’t it! Although not essential for a build thread, you just can’t beat a bit of 60’s TV silliness to liven a post up!

As you can probably tell my side-story lines are influenced by people’s posts. But if you think I’m going to do a piece on me giving birth to a litter of half human half cat babies you can forget it! :D

On a more serious note I was very upset about the bridge cavity and was going to ditch this thread if it wasn’t for all the support you guys shown in your posts. Big thank you to all!

I now have a plan for the bridge cavity that has renewed my enthusiasm for this build. It’s a lot of extra work but if I can pull it off it will be well worth it. I’ll get an update sorted soon with some pics of the repair work and we’ll see where our little side- story is going to go too!

More soon!

Andy (& Randel the Cat)

Cheers BN,

Another quality post mate!

I rekon my last Update could well win the Fender Forums "Most Random Post Award - 2010"

Finished a repair to one of the problem areas today and made a new template for the topside cavities. Its looking good!

I've been thinking a bit more about the bridge cavity and I've decided its well out of my skill range and i need to draft in some serious talent to achieve my goal. Just got off the phone to may mates dad who is a bespoke furniture maker. He's popping round on Monday to help me out. I'm getting quite excited about this now!

I'll post an "Offical Update" over the weekend.

Enjoy

Andy

Or combining a couple of those, how about pictures of cats with big hair?

BTW: there's A LOT of weird cat pictures out there in Google Land...!

Cheers - C

LOL Ceri!

Please tell me you know that picture is, in fact, of a rabbit. Or rather, ahem, a hare with big hair. ;)

I have a feeling if me and Randel did have kids they would probably look like the pic Kong posted :D

Still It would be cool if they turned out like Peter Criss
