Andy, I would rather you weigh the guitar once done with it.

I mean you first posted this on

This is gettin' to the point of being painful to watch.
The last guitar I built took 2 1/2 weeks, this has dragged on for 1/2 a year.
now I know you have had setbacks and other things going on in your life and all, but I think it's time to say to you, sir, please finish this guitar off.

Yeah, sorry about that, Jeffytune.

I'm a slow worker and only make one guitar a year. Life off the forum is busy and this is very much just a little hobby for me. One of many in fact. It will all be done and dusted soon.

I understand Andy, I do understand, I just want, like everyone here would want, to see it done.

That's all I wanted to say, you are doing a great job. (So is your cat)

No worries mate,

I'm writing the last update at the moment. Once that's done I'm off to find a suitable environment to take a ton of nice pics of the final product. The best of those will be posted up tomorrow! :D

Hi Jeff: care to show us that happening? We're eager to see.

To be fair, these build threads are really about a whole lot more than just guitar building. To some of us, anyhow. :D

I would love to, but.

It was years ago, I sold that guitar off, and I never thought to take pictures.

It was before I was on the internet, so like who was i ever going to show them to?

What, stuff like this...?

[Andy takes a deep breath......]

Beer, Viking Carpentry, Marshall Class 5 Amps, Custom Germanium fuzz pedals, Anti-gravity Cats, Mice, Book Festivals, 60's Sci-fi TV programs, Texas Cheerleaders, The tragic effects of Mind Rape, Beer, Discovery of secret " TONE" formula, Micro Marshall Stacks, Turret boards, Literature, Hair products, Beer, Scones, Amp building, the introduction of “The 50 Point Scheme” and possibly the worst cocktail ever made.... to name but a few.

Oooh, did I mention Beer?

In-between all of that we had the odd smattering of amateur guitar building as well!

Well that saves me re-capping the high points of this thread tomorrow! :D

Howdy!

Before we crack on with my nut job, I'm going to give the frets a bit of a buff with some 0000 wire wool.

Image

I've made a fretboard guard out of card that can be moved from fret to fret during the buffing process.

The_Nutter wrote:
And yet he teases us with Hairy Nuts!

That's right! Now our frets are nice and shiny we can move on to my Big Hairy Nuts!

Big Hairy Nut Job

We have two choices here....

Image

...the Earvana compensated retro-fit Strat nut or a Graph-tech Tusk nut. I'm going with the Graph-tech one. There's a couple of reasons for this. The Earvana nut looks butt ugly and I've only got one of those so if I mess up the fret slots later I have to wait for another to be delivered. I have a few of the Graph-tech nuts in my spares draw so we're covered should a Big Hairy disaster strike.

Image

Mr C does a far better job of describing the best way to cut and shape a nut in his last build thread, so I'd recommend checking that out.

Ceri's Nut Job

I have a limited stock of tools for this sort of stuff so I'll be doing some things a little bit differently.

Here's my Nut Job Kit. :D

Image

When I first started building my own guitar bodies I hadn't given much thought to making nuts and didn't want to splash out and buy a load of specialist tools in case I was crap at guitar building (the jury is still out on that one). So I went for the cheap option and bought a set of Normans nut files. As you can see they're made from feeler gauges which is handy but they're only really good for minor slot adjustments as I've read several reviews that say they blunt quickly. I've also got a small file and set of feeler gauges that cover the sizes not included in the nut files.

First thing we need to do now is work out how high the frets are off the board.

Image

Mine are 0.046” high and as mentioned in Ceri's thread, about 0.020” is a pretty standard measurement for string height off the fret so my nut slots need to be 0.066” off the fretboard.

So I don't totally blunt my “Make do” nut files I'm going to file the bottom of the nut down until the bass E string sits at almost the right height in its slot. Here's a pic for comparison.

Image

Then we can make the other minor adjustments to the rest of the slots....

Image

...before the nut is removed and shaped with the file then sanded with P400 paper before being polished with P1200, followed by some 0000 wire wool.

And we have something that looks like this...

Image

And that concludes the Big Hairy Nut Job, and everything else..I think! :D

How do you want me to rap this up? A Ceri style re-cap post followed by the pics you've all been waiting for, or do you just want the pics?

While your all deciding I believe a little celebratory drink is in order!

Image

G&T anyone? Cheers! :D

Hopefully tomorrow we can rap this thread up!

Enjoy!

Ahhh, such sweet imagery you place before my eyes! And such a blessing for the soul to see a set of strings in place! Well done Andy and Randel!

I abso-bloomin-lutely think you should give us a recap'n'pix, if you have the time! That would be a kind of Big Hairy Directors Cut for this great thread, wouldn't it? It deserves a grand finale! :)

Andy & Crew are hopefully not forgetting the Decal-Chapter? Or will it be skipped and be featured in the digitally remastered box set one day? ;)

Ah, now I'll rest my dizzy head. All that talk about nut jobs has made my username feel quite fuzzy 'round the edges! 8)

To put in D. Adams' words:
So long! (and thanks for all the thread, Andy, it's been a joy to ride along!)

Nah, Me and the Team decided to skip the decal for now. Its all made and ready to go but there was an issue over the oiled headstock finish. If it does ever make it on, I'll post some pics

Normans Nut file system.

I sold my Hosco slot files when I got them. Brilliant tool.

.046" fret height. Thats just made me realize how desperately I need to refret my MIM. They sit at .024" high off the board.

Should have Weapon X's fuzz finished tonight. BTW.

I've made alterations to 7 nuts including the one shown here and I've had no probs. For the money they're great. They were a cheap way for me to start practising nut work, but at some point I'll upgrade and pick up a proper set so I can start making my own from bone like you guys. Looks like fun!

Oooh! A Ninja Fuzz at the feet of the Weapon X... Rock on! :D

It would be a great pleasure to witness that act. I figure you could etch the decal into a piece of metal, engrave that and simply, with the metal heated, make a decal "branding", thus skipping any oil-related issues. I'm sure it would look fine on that mahogany veneer!

I have, it helps with the 24/7 translation right now... otherwise würde ich nur auf deutsch schreiben und dann würde mich kein Mensch verstehen! ;)

(The fish has great pride and wishes me to tell you he's not a certain type of fish, he's a Babel fish. And that he's not a he but a she. I hope she's not going to breed inside my ear :!: )

Looking forward to the next installment! (won't be saying that too often on this thread anymore... *sigh*)

Cheers!
