Well, I think we've all learnt two very valuable lessons here. 1) Don't mess with the Ninjas. 2) If you do, make sure you have Randel the Cat watching your back!

3) There's free beer to strat builders at sidevalves gigs.
4) There may even be a saucer of milk for dilligent cats. (all cat's are ninja's btw. Even my mentaly impaired moggy, Winston Image

Andy in all seriousness, that router table is a stroke of genius, it really is. I've spent the last 2 months holding LP templates whilst looking at very expensive pin routers. Thinking ok I could spring for it, but where am I going to put it? How am I going to wire that 3phase inverter to the mains. Well all those questions have been quashed. Seriously theres some beer for you.

Anyways have you seen any posters up localy? I like to know if promoters are actually doing their job and promoting.

Hi DB: that one in my pic is indeed an American ale. :D

It was recommended by Forum user Troublecall and I was pleased to find I can get it locally. That was on this all-time most celebrated Fender Forum Thread:

Crucial reading for all guitarists!

Keep up the good work Andy, realize now that yourself and Niki are apt to go missing from time to time, all in a days work to you guys, raising a glass...http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 131610.ece

Howdy!

Thanks for the posts people!

Well the Ninjas did very good job of promoting but I'm afraid Me and Randel the Cat are quite a bit further south. Ceri was pretty near the mark!

I checked your myspace page and you Sir, have the chops! Great tone 8)

If you do play near by i'll more than happily take you up on that beer! Randel says Hi to Winston and drinks semi-skimmed (he needs to maintain his optimum Ninja physique)

Glad you like the router table! No kidding it takes less than 10 minuets to bosh a template out. I had concerns about its accuracy as the top needs to be perfectly level and the router base flush with the top. That's why the perspex top covers the whole table. My straight edge says its good but I've found that once I've got the cutter to the right height I have to lock the router in place then back the bolt off a bit to get it perfectly level again. Considering what its made from it works very well. The real test is comming up soon. If I had a bit more money I'd do things very differently. If your wanting to make your own, I have a few “upgrades” you may wish to incorporate. Or you can save yourself the hastle and buy a far superior router table for under £200

That is a very cool thread indeed. I spent the best part of last summer drinking ale. Mainly Waggle Dance and the occasional bottle of Theakstons Old Peculier....... from what i can remember, I had a bloody good time! :D

Ha! That made me chuckle!

Lesson Number 1) Don't mess with the Ninjas!

Enjoy!

Howdy!

Just a little update today.

With the templates all done its time to start working with the African mahogany blank. But before we do that.....

Safety First Kids

I should have posted this right at the beginning but better late than never. Time for a little lecture on Health and Safety (or Self and Hasty as I like to call it! :D ) Now, I prefer to do things the “old school” way and use hand tools wherever possible but for some jobs you need to plug in. I plug all my gear into an RCD socket to stop me getting electrocuted in case I cut a cable or something stupid like that.

Image

When using power tools its important to wear the correct P.P.E. (Personal Protective Equipment). Both the router and the jigsaw are very noisy bits of kit and prolonged use will damage your hearing so ear defenders are a must. Working with these tools will also produce a lot of fine dust which will get air born and both have the potential cause wood to randomly splinter out so a decent dust mask and eye protection / goggles are essential.

Here's what I use..

Image

By wearing the above there are the obvious benefits to prolonging your life but you also get to dress up and pretend your a Power Ranger for the day! How cool is that! :D

Of course I've carried out a “Work Place Risk Assessment” and the relevant “Method Statements” for this build just to be on the safe side. I don't want the H.S.E shutting down my base of operations due to a lack of relevant paper work (Randel the Cat is busy enough keeping the Ninjas at bay).

Now, Seriously, If you see these kind of threads and think “Yeah, I'll give that a go” please be careful and take you time. If your not familiar with power tools (especially routers), do me a favour and make the extra time and effort to find someone who is, so they can show you the best and safest way to use them.

So play safe kids

Any questions?...

Right, rant over. Now we can continue....

Chapter (2). The First Cut...

With a see-through template we can easily choose which bit we're going to use. I rekon this is the spot....

Image

There's a nice grain line that runs almost straight down the centre. I've drawn round the template and marked the three screw holes. Now before I do anything else I want to check the direction of the grain so that when I come to carve out the arm rest the grain turns in towards the body.

Image

With the block plain I've shaved the corner and as we can see in the above pic the grains going where we want it so we're in business!

As P.P Arnold once said “The first cut is the deepest”. I hate this bit. The first cut always makes me nervous...

We don't need the top section so thats first to go.

Image

Now we get “Jiggy with it” :D

I need to remove all the excess wood to make it easier on the router when we come to that stage. I don't want to cut to close to the line as the Jig Saw is prone to cause “split-outs” and / or chipping so a good 10mm distance is maintained all the way round. I've drilled a couple of holes to make the tight turns near the horns a bit easier.

Image

Bugger...

Image

This is what prompted me to post the above rant on Health and Safety. Despite the holes I still went ahead and got a little bit cocky with the inside turn by the lower horn and broke a blade. No damage done but this could have been a lot worse. The broken blade “could” have jumped and put a very nasty ding in the top of body. Silly me. I didn't have a spare blade so I sent Randel the Cat out to get me another one.

He took his time and while I was waiting I had a creative surge. Ten minuets later.....

Image

…..and we have our first piece of “Router Table Art”. I'm not sure which I'm more impressed with. The way it made those templates or the fact that I can scribble silly-ness all over it :D

Randel returns with a fresh blade and we continue....

Image

Now its starting to look a bit more like a Strat.

Well the above is where we're at for now and unfortunately due to heavy work commitments my future posts for this thread will not be as frequent as they have been. Sorry about that.

Real Ale

I enjoyed reading the “In Praise of Great Beer” Thread that Ceri posted and feel I should be supporting my local brewery...

So tonight I will be mostly drinking....

Image

Thanks again for all the posts people!

Until Next time...

….Enjoy!

Andy (& Randel the Cat)

Andy,

Fantastic Job so far sir!
I am loving this! BTW you have great taste in your libation choice.

I did some searching around the 'net and came across what I believe is a young Randel on a Strat.

Hi Impulse7,

Not good.

A router bit malfunction has ruined a template and the top bridge cavity. Once i've got over the shock of whats happened and formulated a new plan I'll get this thread back on track. These things happen...

Untill then I'm putting this on hold.
