Well, let's see -- I'm going to submit three entries:

Now, you have the fine looking patterned inlay. You also have the seam showing where it's sunk into the body. You could be planning a laminate covering on the outer circumference of the body edge to hide the inlay seams.

or

You could be planning to use the veneer to cover the inlay showing thru in the spring cavity

or

Incorporating the veneer into the headstock of the neck (inlay?)

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we have a winner!

KOZY814!!!

Well done Kozy, 50 Points to you sir!

OK so I'm not going to inlay it but more of an overlay (I can't be too mean this time!). I will indeed be using the veneer to cover the head stock to match the majority of the body!

Enjoy!

All 50 point recipients gain entry into a secret part of the forum where all the preimum build threads are posted.

I have no idea what its like as no-one has ever awarded me 50 points :(

Enjoy!

Uh-oh. I better start doing some actual work on this thing. No more basking in the relative obscurity of the Tele forum! :?

Andy, I'd gladly award ya points for all the great info you've provided since I arrived on the scene. Now, if we rate these points on a knowledge scale, Andypoints are worth at least 3 times as much as Kozypoints...

That being said Andy, you are awarded 150 Kozypoints.

The unfortunate thing about these points is they are not redeemable for anything but satisfaction... And continued membership in this rogue band of guitar junkies --- I think that's worth quite a bit. That and maybe an ice cold brew! :D

Well I've only just joined but read through a lot of these build threads and they literally blow my mind. I don't know how you guys are putting this level of craftsmanship in! The first two I read was the one that was set on fire that I believe Ceri did? Then kongs which may have been drowned, wow they turned out good

So what I'm saying is thanks to all you builders for the wealth of knowledge and entertainment you give me whilst I'm waiting for my guitar to arrive :)

Howdy!

I'm keen to get this project moving at a more satisfying pace, both for you the viewer and me the builder. I reckon I've got a handle on the project I'm managing at work now. So if all goes well Updates should be a bit more regular from now on. That said I'm not going to rush through and just bosh this together. One of the reasons for posting this build was to stop me from doing just that. Having you nice people (and Randel the Cat) on board is pushing me to achieve things that I wouldn't normally have thought I was able to. So thanks!

Anywhoo...On with the build! :D

Grain Filling Test

For this we're going to leave the body for a bit as I want to try a few things out first.

I haven't done a great deal of this type of grain filling before as on previous builds I've built up a finish using a mixture of satin varnish and white spirit, followed buy furniture wax which was applied with wire wool then buffed. That method has worked 50% of the time for me.

This time round I using Brummer Grain Filler which I've only used once before and I'm not 100% sure that Dark Mahogany is the right colour. So for that reason (and another that we'll get to later) I've made a couple of test pieces from the off cuts of the body slab we started with.

Image

Both pieces have received the same treatment as the body (sanded down to P240 fine). I'll be following the Ceri Grain Fill method of making a paste then using a glue spreader and/or a bit of plastic (used for applying those annoying screen covers that stop my iphone's screen from getting scratched) to thinly apply the filler to the blocks. Then using a damp cloth rapped wad to gently rub the filler further into the grain so we end up with something like this....

Image

Humm...not pretty. Anyway, We let that dry for a bit then using damp cloth we can start to rub way the excess filler.

Image

So we end up with this...

Image

Then some more rubbing...

Image

Its almost got a bit of a shine to it. Nice and I'm happy with the colour.

Once their both fully dry they were sanded using all the grades of paper detailed an earlier update in order then cleaned with spirit and left to dry. I'm pleased with the results and see no reason why the same process can't be applied to the body. So that's the Grain Filling Test done.

Finishing Test.

Here's why there's two pieces.

Image

I want to know which product yields the best results. Rustin's Danish Oil or Liberon Tung Oil. I've read good things about both but this test will be the decider.

I'm going to apply both products using the same method of making a 50% oil 50% spirit mix

Image

Image

Then we liberally apply the oil mix with a cloth rapped wad then leave it to soak in for about 5- 8mins...

Image

...before wiping the excess oil off with a clean cloth.

Image

That's the first coat done. Each coat will require about 6- 8 hrs. drying time so I'll leave that to dry over night before hopefully applying two more coats tomorrow. As I go through the coat i'll use less and less spirit until we apply the final few pure oil coats.

I'll post more pics as we go. A natural finish with oil compared to spraying its a piece of cake and a pretty decent satin finish can be achieved in about five days....which is what should happen if theses test pieces turn out as they should.

More tomorrow!

Oooh! Thanks for the beer Kozy. At 9% that's in the Old Tom territory right there!

And Hi Snowjoe! Welcome to the Forum! Glad your enjoying the posts. Stick around, lots of cool stuff still to come! :D

Enjoy!

Andy & Randel the Cat

Edit: One more to add to the list! This is a pro at work folks. Forum user Twelvebar has a thread that's going to be a total Master Class in how to finish a Strat. Now this guy knows his stuff. Respect! 8)

Its Awesome!!

Thanks for the kind words. But like everyone here, i am a hobbyist, or enthusiast. I only hope I can add to the conversation, you Ceri and Kong, (and now Kozy too,) have set a pretty high bar.

BTW procasticaster was just a lame joke, since i had the parts for 3 months before i got rolling.

I am leaning heavily toward calling it the 'Canadian Special'

It has the same pickups as the American Special line, but when the AS came out i remember thinking about how i might have done it a bit differently to make it stand out more from the regular line of guitars.

So I sat down and figured out what I personally wanted, and there you have it.

Andy, you and Randall have been doing a bang up job. i can't wait to see what happens next.

Hi Andy: that is grain filling done - and demonstrated - to perfection. Deep respect! 8)

It's nuttin' to be scared of, right? Especially with that Brummer grain filler, which to my mind is so much easier to use than the older ones. Endlessly adjustable, so you can get the finish you want at the speed you want. Ideal! Nice work, fella.

Very interested to see what you conclude about the Danish/Tung oil experiment. Not much in it yet, so far as I can see from the photos. I've used Danish oil on wooden kitchen worktops but never done tung oil before, so breath is bated...

You're so good at this stuff it seems only right to comb the country for a beer to fit a woodworking gentleman. As a part-time Devonian I naturally have righteously mixed feelings about straying across the border into Cornwall, but I was prepared to venture to Straw Dogs territory for these:

That lot do ya - you buccaneer of guitar building, you? 8)

Carry on - C
