At 25 ive just begun to love with strats. I never thought i would be into them... ive played pretty much everything (most gibsons, mosrites, gretsch) and always was on the gibson side of the fence. I now have 2 newer strats and think they are the most versatile amazing guitars ive ever played. Id like to afford the vintage stuff but just cant.

my question is... does anyone know how to properly take the laquer off of the American Delux Strats...? ive used acetone and it hasnt budged. maybe i have to be more patient. also... how do you vintage the neck...? if anyone could shed some light id be very grateful. maybe as a reward ill send you one of the new lennys, haha.

i reliced mine by banging it into things!!! but seriously you can either abuse it the old fasioned way or do it the "relicing artist way" of using sandpaper and all of that. here is a site that will help=
http://www.relicdeluxe.com/body_guitar_ ... finish.asp

be carfull if you want it authentic though because poly laquer doesnt wear quite the same for the most part. i went over mine with 1000grit wet/dry paper though because it was too shiny and now it looks better but be carefull!! you can really mess your guitar up and then it will hurt everytime you look at it. i think the best way is just bang it around and take it out to a concrete floor and get drunk and play it and keep setting it down on the concrete and kick it if it gets to close to you also put cigerettes in the headstock and forget about them... it seems being drunk and relicing go hand in hand, things like that. that way you will never regret a mistake and you wont be so worried about scraching it either. and it will look authentic because it is!! also play tell your sweating so the screws will rust..

ok now im waiting for my lenny guitar to beat up

Why in the world did you ruin a great guitar? I don't get it.

If you're young buy a guitar & wait for it to age normally!!!!
THE END

if you want it relic'd. there are a few ways to do it.
1)wait 20 years.

2)use sandpaper for the wear, and VERY CAREFULLY use a dremmel tool or something similar to grind some of the paint off in the areas you want. The sandpaper gives a good worn through look, while the dremmel gives the chipped paint look.

3)invite some buddies over, get drunk, and jam in a room with concrete walls and floor. then forget to use guitar stands, and somehow get convinced that rubbing the guitar against the walls will make a cool sound through the amp. and when the hangover goes away, you will have a beat up guitar.

as for necks, CAREFULLY use super fine grit sandpaper to wear off some of the finish. careful though, necks dont have that much finish on them, and its very easy to $@!& up the neck completely.

there are a few websites with good relicing tips, just look around.

Thanks kja and ben. im slightly afraid of the scratches sandpaper will leave behind thats why i was trying to use chemicals primarily. we'll see.

also... i dont relic all my guitars just the one or two i want to play around with for fun. I like experimenting thats why im doing it. and yes i do have guitars that i have owned for a decade or so that i play live for months out of the year that do rack up some wear and tear naturally.

but to nikki... i appreciate you going into a thread thats about relicing when you have nothing good to say about it. maybe next time you can post something positive about an aspect of Fenders that you do care about.

if you use super fine grit sandpaper, like 1000 grit, it wont leave scratch marks. try to get some of the stuff they use for Auto paint finishing. its made specifically for sanding off paint without damaging anything. it works way better than stuff made for smoothing wood.
and be prepared to use a lot of it, cause super fine paper clogs up and wears down fast.

also, does the guitar have a nitro finish? if it does, you should be able to use chemicals. if it doesn't, chemicals won't work.

1000 grit wet/dry will leave scratches (they look cool honestly) but if your worried about that then take off the pickgaurd and hardware and neck and use like 2000 and go lightly and then buff it with a guitar polish. its important to go with the grain of the wood though so you wont see swirls.

i used 1000 dry without taking anything off and then buffed it with ghs guitar polish i had laying around and it looks good. it looks like a highway 1 but some areas are more worn then others from a heavier hand with the paper. i really wasnt trying to make it look perfect, just take the shinyness off and make it more comfterable to hold so it wasnt so sticky but it turned out looking good i guess.

i was serious about banging my guitar around though.. what was ever wrong with banging a fender around? thats as american as apple pies and my guitar sounds great but i play great too so i can do what i want to her. i dont want a guitar i have to baby and polish and use lemon oil and all this crap just so i can stand there and play like some douch? it makes her stronger and i havent ruined her because ive made so many improvements to her that should have been there in the first place! i mean fender made a guitar that had shortcomings... idk why other than to make money so i had to fix all of that but now shes normal again like a normal strat.and i was banging guitars around before anybody talked about relicing and nitro and all this.... all that is new to me so dont judge me for all of that.

hey, if you want intentionally scrape off, paint, few dings here and there, make look like if used it all your life, more power to you.
however, that guitar will most likely be in your collection for the rest of your life. play hard, and let it relice by itself in time. my 2 cents.
i protect my hwy 1's keep them clean, play hard, but with time they will relice on their own.

If you want a relic, buy something old. I know they are expensive(pre CBS) but you get the SOUND. It may look old if you relic-ize a new guitar, but it will not SOUND like an older model. I personally like a good looking guitar. If it does get beat up, I like to remember the instance when the "relicing"took place. "Remember when I fell off the stage at that one gig when the follow spot was in my eyes??" You know, that sorta thing.

To be completely honest I "opened" the thread because I didn't know what relicing was. Then I realized you were talking about relic. It's all in one's personal taste. I don't buy reproduction furniture or paintings so I'm not a fan of "the old look". If I want old, I want the real thing. That's just me.

Thank goodness we aren't all alike as the music world would be extremely boring.
