I bought this strat at a pawn shop a few years ago before I knew anything about guitars. I recently realized that this guitar is far from stock. It has a completely different bridge/pickups than the standards, and I've never seen this paint job before. I only paid $150 for it, as I knew that was cheap even for a MIM. Can anyone give me any information on it besides the dates based off of the serial?

I believe those were called "Splattercasters." My friend had a brightly colored one. It was a cool guitar.

Sorry to be the bearer of this news, but the bridge is a plain, 6-point vintage. Just saying, it's nothing custom. Can't tell anything about the trem block without seeing under the back plate. Is there a battery compartment on the back of the guitar? If so, you would have active electronics. The saddles should say Fender on them and the name should be swung 180° from one side to the next on each saddle. Otherwise they may be of "Ping®" manufacture. Not sure about how that all works. Fender can tell you all about the instrument if you send the serial number to customer support for an inquiry.

Outside of the "spin" paint job, that looks like a pretty stock Stratocaster. That said... you got a GREAT price on it! Good snag! 8)

Yea...looks like a Splattercaster to me too. I know those were only around for a year or two...I don't think they sold very well. Either way though, good instruments...basically a Fender MIM Standard with a "special" paint job. If it's more or less original (which it looks to be), for $150 from a pawn shop even a couple of years ago that's a pretty good deal.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim

Incredibly good price... But, it shouldn't be called a splattercaster... Should be called a ReFinishCaster...

I was just looking at that again and really... a 3 ply plain white or maybe black pick guard would give that a whole new look. I think a "good" look at that!

But that is only my opinion. 8)
