I have a mid-eighties (84-87) Japanese Strat and was wondering what a ballpark value would be for it?

All original and in excellent condition with a Fender black hard shell case. Serial #E947xxx

Thanks!

Well...kind of depends on a couple of things. First, a good ball park value is really going to depend on where you live. Demand can be higher or lower for these instruments depending on what part of the planet you live on. Also, the model is going to play a big factor too...is it a straight Strat or is it a Contemporary? If it's a Contemporary with a System I or III trem and assuming the trem is complete, intact and not stripped, that's going to get a bit more money than a vintage style will. Your saying it's an '84 - '87 suggests it's an E-series...if so these tend to fetch a little bit better price than other MIJ's because they have a really excellent reputation for quality. If it's post E-series however, you can expect it to get around the same as a decent used Fender MIM Standard.

So that said, if you watch Ebay, these mid 80's MIJ's tend to go for around $400 - $500 and up...my '85 Squier MIJ was $329 (and these came out of the exact same factory) and the Fender branded versions typically go for $100 to $150 or so more (again depending on the individual instrument). I've seen a couple of Contemporary's going for as high as $850 or so (although I think that's a way bit too high).

Alrighty, just my opinions but I'd keep an eye on Ebay for a good general figure (although watch some of those sellers...there's one guy who's always got the same instruments for sale! If the instrument doesn't sell, that usually means the asking price was too high).

Peace,
Jim

Post some pics of it.

I have 3 LEFT HANDED mid 80's MIJ Strats and have paid between $300 and $700 for them. Figure maybe about $100 less for Right Handed ones.
Although I been seeing people asking (but not getting) $800+ for them.

Like Chet I also have 3 MIJ Fenders except mine are all Teles, I bought all three brand new and one of them is one of my best guitars period. The craftsmanship was top notch on these guitars and I am one that believes at one point were even better than Fender MIA. I was shocked to see though when I bought the Blue Book of Guitars that the resale is not much at all. In fact more MIM guitars have higher resale value. The only explanation I personally can come up with is that Fender MIJ was doing such a great job Fender stopped them from importing into the US over a decade ago so unless you were there when they were out and know what they are all about there is not a high demand for them.

Fender MIJ Standard's were made from 1988 - 1991 Prior to that they were Squier, and after that they were Fender MIM.
E +6 numbers were made from 1984-1989.

My E +6 series MIJ Standard is a 1989. Best way to tell is to remove the neck and check the dates on the end of the neck and in the neck pocket.

It doesn't say squier anywhere and in fact it is similar to the headstock on my '91 american standard except is says made in japan instead of made in USA.

Like my E series Standard it may be an 88 or 89. Seeing the pics will help.

Is it completely original?

Front and back of headstock, full front of body, back of neck where it attaches to body.

How many frets does it have?
