if you have not clear coated it yet, I would suggest to go to a lumber supplier, pick up a few pieces of alder or just one piece 3 feet (1meter) long, cut the 3 ft section into smaller pieces.
Then get some small sample cans of wood stains, a couple different clear coat all water based finishes and experiment on the wood samples with the tints and finishes until you get your own custom finish.
I would be patient as to this process, as rushing with applying finishes will be disastrous, drying time is always critical.

If left clear and you need to remove the newly applied finish (hopefully not)
I suggest this stripper. It is called Soygel, it is made from soybeans, is water soluble, nontoxic, eco-friendly, cleans up with water and strips water or oil based paints, varnishes, urethane or water based finishes.
You can find it at < Abatron.com> I use it often in my work.
I'm currently completing a full renovation process of an 1840 Cape, it has been a 3+ year process between restructural rebuild and finish work, fir trim casings, cherry floors, spanish tiles etc..

Good Luck with the project looks great !

Damn i dont know how you guys do to modified or dissassemble guitar that worth nearly 2000 $ .

when i see those 2500 - 3000 $ on ebay and people dissembled them to show each part .. that drive me nuts .

Maybe its because i know nothing in guitar hardware .. but only my guitar luthier dissembled and clean and set up my guitar . i only change strings on it .

any pickup , tuning keys or whatever i modified i pay for it and its done by a luthier .

and i have a basic american standard hss i paid 600 $ .

i cant imagine trying to repaint or do any modificaiton on a 1500 $ guitar .

skysc I agree with you 100% except in the case as Nevin already stated he is never going to sell it and it must be his #1. Guitars that are my main players have been modded to what makes them totally to my liking. If you go on Harmony Centrals forum right now you will see a guy who just bought a $3,500 PRS and on the second day routed a part of the guitar and swapped out the pups without a care and was laughing how he voided the warranty. I see this all the time on there usually with younger guys but this guy seemed as if he just had money to burn.

Nevin I really like the direction you are going and the picture of the Strat you put up in natural with the mint pick guard looks great. You could always go with a black pick guard to. The only thing I would say is if you never did this before I would have a pro finish the rest so it looks perfect. After all how much could they charge as you have done most of the labor yourself.

The Nudie-caster! :D

I've liked that look since the '70s. Doing an EJ that way is cool! Nice.

I like it!!
If EJ says there should be no paint on any of the contact points, then no paint at all should be even better, right!?!?!?
Nevin I wouldn't be afraid to try paint it though. Everyone who cautions against it are just being Nancys!!!! you already did the hardest part, initially stripping it down. to me that is the step where the most can go awry. After that first strip down is done, and you know what is on it, any redos are easy peasy. No danger of gouging it, or burning it while trying to deal with a poly undercoat. At this point as long as you work carefully and methodically all that can go wrong is that it becomes a money pit, if you fail repeatedly.

get some scrap, and practice, you have folks here that will give you advice on mixing that butterscotch blonde too.

Aside from the horror of stripping a beautiful nitro finish off a $2000 guitar... I really like it! :D It looks very cool, very understated. And it's especially nice with the maple neck.

Personally, I like it. I have a late 60's P-bass clone from Katy that's very similar (although mine had some pretty heafty gloss back when she was younger). The big difference is that my bass has a black pickguard & pickups covers...I think I might consider trying that on the Strat there.

Otherwise I might do a good oil rub or something and go with it...very nice looking instrument there.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim
