Well, I think first and foremost you'll need to toss some more info out here for everyone. What kind of music do you play? What kind of guitar do you have? I'm guessing since you're posting here that it's a Strat, but more details on it if you can. What kind of sound are you hoping to achieve? Do you have any favorite guitarists that you would compare the tone you're looking for to? Any information you could give would help anyone else here help you out.

Can't go wrong with Boss pedals. But what style of music are you playing? Basically, look up the gear your favorite guitarists use and go from there. All I can suggest of the bat is a good pedal tuner. Boss is really good and reliable for years of abuse.

You need to start with a great amp, a great guitar, a quality cable, and build from there. After you get your basic tone dialed in, take your guitar, cable, and amp to a music store and start trying pedals. Buy the ones that meet your needs and sound the best with your rig. There are dozens of companies that produce quality guitar pedals, and the only way you will know is to try them all. Most players start with compression, delay/ chorus, and some sort of fuzz or drive petal.
