Hi guitarist_311

The dust that you are referring to is more than likely a very fine sand type substance.

As you wipe the guitar, it is acting as a rather harsh abrasive and hence dulling the surface finish of your guitar.

A light cutting compound (I don't know what is available in your area but I think Gibson sell a renovating cream, although there will be may others) should bring back the shine to your guitar. It is very unlikely that you have caused any permanent damage.

In future I would suggest that you gently wipe the guitar down with a lightly dampened cloth before polishing to try and remove as much of the abrasive residue as possible.

Hope this helps

Russ

What model Fender are you talking about? Does it have a poly or nitro finish?? Nitro really doesn't like to be polished every day, poly for that matter too.

In my opinion, the simplest solution is to keep your guitar in its case when you're not playing it so it doesn't get dusty.

Before I do any wiping on my guitar, I use a can of air to blow off any dust or other particulate that could be on the surface. If I don't have a can of air handy, I always have a fine camel hair brush (like the ones used for cleaning optical lenses on cameras and telescopes) and I use that to brush off the surface. I don't so much brush as I fan it over the surface

My guitars are lucky if they get polished twice in a year. A good wipe down is all that is needed. You may very well be over polishing your ax and taking some of the clearcoat with it.
