Hi all,

In my neck of the woods, there's not many nice big guitar shops with stacks of amps for me to test.

Last year I got a American Standard Stratocaster and a pile of other cheaper guitars like a Tele copy.

Now the Tele, a Wesley, sounds ok in the bridge position and the neck pickup sucks, too muddy and lacking definition. My American Standard Strat, is excellent all around.

My problem is I brought this little Marshall MG30DFX to play these and all my other axes on, having previously had a second hand 50w pile of rubbish to play on last 10 years. This little amp sounds quite good.

What kind of an amp could I use to get a better sounds, I play kind of crunchy rhythms and nice little leads using the bridge pickup. I don't need some stadium filling amp, just a nice little amp for a small to medium sized room, and getting a nice overdriven sound to play crunchy rhythms and little leads on.

Go on here and listen to 'Gold Digger' to hear the kind of stuff I play http://www.myspace.com/lightshowproject

Any help is appreciated, cheers!

I just got one of these G-Dec 3's. I love it, what a great little amp. Sounds great and plenty of power for any small of medium room. The thirty even has the abilty to connect to a PA system if needed. With all the built in effects and amp modeling you can play any style. Good luck

i got a peavey 212 valveking a few months back. i got the floor model for a bit of a discount. paid around $540 after fedzilla got his share. i must say, it pleases my ears more than my marshall, carvin and line 6. it is very LOUD. wouldn't suggest it for someone in an apartment. i've never had it over 4 at practice and my cuz plays on a mesa boogie. the 212 is heavy but beats the crap out of lugging around a halfstack. great little amp. the footswitch does not come with it which sucks. good luck.

Marshall DSL 401. 40watt combo.

I just spent a Saturday recording through a studio's DSL 50watt head. I'm absolutely in love with the things. I'm really thinking of ditching one of my JCM800's for one. I really do think Marshall make a far better 50watt amp than their 100watters. One Strat, one lead, one DSL, that was all I needed for arguably the best guitar sound that day. I've a rough mix of the songs but the mastered versions will be up on our myspace page within the week.

The DSL 401 does suffer from boxy speaker syndrome. Its worth looking for a 2x12 cab for one as time goes by. You can pick em up for around £400 no worries. They were £600 new if memory serves.

Click here to see a old ebay listing of one

Pro Junior if you're not concerned with volume, and Blues Junior if you are. Both are fantastic, awesome, magnificent examples of simple and effective amplifier design.

I've always gotten better results with TUBE AMPS...I have a Marshall MG series (solid state) that sounds almost o.k. with my Les Paul but terrible with the STRAT. My STRAT sounds very good thru my Peavey ValveKing 112 50 watt (tube) amp.

Although i think the Blues Jr is a fantastic amp and i just bought one two weeks ago for my birthday present to myself...I think for your style of play it isn't going to have the crunch tones you are looking for without pedals..

I can't advise you on what amp to buy ..I do not know your availability and pricing across the great pond...I would think Marshall would be cheaper on your side of the ocean and the tones on that sound clip sound kinda Marshall crunchy to me...

At the risk of unleashing yet another argument about the relative merits and versatility of the Pro Jr., with which I am intimately familiar, and to a lesser extent the Blues Jr., which I don't know as well, I must respectfully yet vigorously disagree. I have been using a Pro Jr. as my main rehearsal amplifier for years. It's also served plenty of time as my sole gigging amp, and only recently been incorporated into a two-amp gigging rig. In spite of its utter simplicity and minimalist control layout, the PJ is an incredibly versatile amp.

Excluding tones that rely on extremely robust gain structures, the little blue box can do anything; rock, blues, and country tones are all well within its spectrum, as is funk and even jazz. Virtually every guitar sounds good through it. With a Gretsch I could achieve some pleasing tones reminiscent of AC/DC, while a Telecaster unleashed bright sounds suitable for any variety of rock or blues. What I'm getting at, of course, is the simple fact that crunchy rhythm tones are eminently achievable with the PJ. As far as small amplifiers go, I believe it -- and its bigger brother -- to be among the best ever created.

Finally, it's worth speculating that most guitar players have at least a couple of stompboxes kicking around. The PJ and BJ are renowned for taking pedals well, and serve as excellent platforms for adding gain. For what it's worth, I currently only have one pedal in my chain, a Way Huge Pork Loin, which serves as a clean boost: I want my solos to be a tad more, well, louder.

Thats exactly the reason why, Marshall are much cheaper here. For £400 here you'll get a far superior Marshall or Laney amp than you will a Fender.

Arguably for that price you'd be better off to save a bit more and go for a Vintage Modified Bandmaster from Fender, if thats what you have to have. Then you'd have to save another £200 odd for the speaker cab. The Deluxe Vintage Modified is a little more towards your pricerange but I'm weary of a single 12" speaker on this range. I plugged my Vibrochamp into a 4ohm 4x12 and that sounded tremendous on most of the Fender models.

The Peavey amps are great, rock solid and robust. My only gripe with them is Peavey's signature gain sound. That cascading gain does nothing for me whatsoever. The clean sounds are really nice though.

I'm using a Fender Superchamp XD. I've heard the first production models were flawed, but I've had mine well over a year and its been great. Sounds awesome with my Strat and my Les Paul. You can run it clean with it 15W tube amp power, or use one of its DSP 16 amp modules. Plus it has four effects too. Reverb, Delay, Chorus, and Tremolo. Not bad for a small 15W tube amp for under $300 US

I'm thinking of getting an amp off projectmusic.net

The one I narrowed it down to was the VOX AD50VT one, does that deliver good crunchy sounds for tunes like Gold Digger on my myspace?

Also, will it sound good at low volumes?
