As long as it fits in the route then yes you can. A single coil is the same size the difference may be the output and tonal qualities. Depending on what you are exchanging it may sound like crap or it may be a happy accident. There are no rules.

I have done this a few times to obtain a certain result. For instance, I put a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the neck positions on a Deluxe Tele to get a really fat, P-90 sound. It worked really well. I just had to have a hot pickup in the back-end to keep up with the output! Most calibrated bridge pickups are generally hotting in their k output to give a little extra bite.

I had all bridge pups on one mine. Makes for a very hot guit.
