I know this has been asked 20 million times but ... what's the best/ultimate/proper way to restring your guitar, and is it the same for posts with holes and posts with slots? I have one of each and whenever they come back from the tech they look incredibly neat but I always forget to ask how he does it!

if you aren't sure, i recommend you search on youtube. being able to see a demontration is much easier than trying to understand what someone means through a written post.

Good Luck, Ray

I have vintage tuners, the kind with the slot across the top of the peg and a hole down through the middle. Here's how I do it.

One string at a time. Unwind and cut the old string, remove it. Feed the new string through the body and pull it finger tight up to the correct peg. Using a small wire cutter, I clip the string to length measuring to "TWO PEGS" beyond the peg I want to wrap it around. Start with the low "E" and you'll have a good feel for the length by the time you reach the last two pegs which won't have two pegs beyond them to measure.

Line the slot of the peg up with the neck before you start to wind. Bend about a three-eighths to half-inch of string at a 90° and push it into the hole in the center of the post and hold the string down. Now using your winder, start turning anti-clockwise while keeping downward pressure on the string at the post using your index finger. You should end up with a nice wrap going down the taper of the peg so the pressure on it is forcing the string against itself as it attempts to rise up the peg. Finish the other five strings. It will look nice and you'll never stick your finger with a string end.
