I own one of each and find them both to be very good guitars. No complaints from me on either one.

I have said this before and will probably have to say this again...There is a Fender guitar out there for just about anyone who likes them; not every Fender guitar is for everyone. This is why there are so many different models...variety is the key to any successful business.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I understand that. But let's not degrade a paticular line just because you do not like them. I am sure that someone else does and then the ugly comes out and threads get locked.

DON'T FEED THE TROLLS...THEY BITE!!!!

I know this "person"!! This gem is on YouTube under the name 'stratdem'. He constantly; to the major annoyance of the YouTube audience out there, lauds the otherworldly qualities of the Highway One Strat SSS!
Granted....I LOVE the Highway One Strat; (HSS in particular) but I do realize that they are not without their faults! As with most things in life....we have to 'tweak' them to our own particular liking.
In my previous posts, I mentioned that I have 8 of them. I HAD TO change ALL the pickups (I found them to be weak and useless!), the crappy PING tuners, and I replaced the saddles with Graph Tech String Savers.
Now and...only NOW are they acceptable to me........in fact they are perfect for me!
I am NOT, however, going to BLINDLY and repeatedly (ad nauseum) state my opinions on every Fender related forum!

I'll take the HWY 1 over the Am Spcl without hesitation. I prefer the nitro finish over poly and you can keep the Tx Special pups. Those dont really impress me much. So many people use them to begin with that I'd prefer something different if I am going to pay for an upgrade on what is essentially a HWY 1 with poly finish. Same guitar except for the finish and pups. Not saying the AM Spcl is rubbish, but I like the HWY 1 better.

I have a 3-tone burst HW1 that is four pieces! The seams on mine are VERY hard to see as they matched the grains of the pieces of wood beautifully. Nonetheless, I would bet yours is at least two...

I play both my Highway 1 and American Special (and for the record my Squier CV 60) equally. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. If I had to choose 1 over the other (Hwy 1 vs American Special) I could not choose 1 over the other. I can say this though, I prefer both of them over my CV 60.

Personally, I'd just look for a used American Standard Strat. They can be found for less than $700 now. While I do like the idea of jumbo frets, I prefer buying used gear over new nowadays. I'd rather buy something I know if I change my mind on later down the road, I won't be out a ton of money. Not to mention, I really don't like the large headstock...

I have owned the HSS HWY one for 2 years and LOVE it, can't recommend it enough. I will say that stock pu's okay but I would recomend an eventual upgrade:

Mine is as follows:

Pickups ugraded (Seymour Duncan Custom Wound Humbucker)
LR Baggs Piezo tremolo bridge system/ contrl X preamp
new sexy pickguard
buffed to a high shine with expensive rubbing compound/ wax
