appearently fender added a few unnecessary option to the strat:
drop d option, drop e, telecaster-sound option, acoustic guitar
and the rest i cant remember!

if you ask me - i stick with the classic strat

You no longer need to choose between a virtual guitar and a real guitar. The Fender VG Stratocaster is both—everything you'd expect from a Fender Strat, and a whole lot more!

Lurking beneath its classic Strat exterior are 37 sounds based on Strat, Tele, humbucker Strat and acoustic, as well as 5 tunings, but the aesthetic and cosmetic of the Strat remains intact. Even better, the VG Stratocaster delivers level, balanced tone and volume across all these remarkable functions, so that you won't need to continually readjust amp settings with each change in guitar sound.

The Mode Control Knob between a Virtual version of the Ash bodied Strat (for use of the tuning function), a virtual Telecaster, virtual 2-humbucker Strat, and an assortment of 5 acoustics, from Dreadnought to Resonator. The 5-way blade switch switches you between sounds in the modeling modes just like on a regular guitar.

Tune function rotary control lets you choose between Normal regular tuning, Drop D, Open G, DADGAD, Baritone/Low B, and 12 string. The tuning function does not work in Normal mode when circuit is bypassed. Tuning function is also relative if you tune down to E flat, all of these tunings will transpose down a half step. Since guitarists don't have to turn a single tuning key, a major benefit of all these instant tuning changes is that the string tension remains the same and the guitar itself feels the same

Fender VG Stratocaster Electric Guitar Features:
American Series Strat®

Maple neck
Maple or Rosewood Fretboard

An assortment of 5 acoustics, from Dreadnought to Resonator

Apparently, you don't get it.

Instead of asking this crowd, why not just click on the the HUGE FREAKIN' VG STRAT BANNER at the front of this site and seeing what Fender has to say on the subject? They do a a real good job of explaining it.

Or just read the cut and paste info in the post above.

I just got a standard strat (MIM) and find it really good and up to the mark. In fact, I wanted a VG, but could'nt afford it at present. From whatever I have read and actually heard on the Fender stite as well as some other sites (the actual sound of the VG, I mean), I really mean that you cannot buy anuthing better than the VG !! Yes that's it. If you really play the guitar, as it should be played, then what better than the VG ? It's everything a guitarist would want, all rolled into one beautiful and rocking guitar. Heard the 12 string sound ? Try and differentiate it froma real 12 string. You can't. Heard the Tele sound ? Try and differentiate that. You can't. So's the case with all other sounds.

C'mon guys, when is one goin' to be happy ? What more do you expect from a guitar ?

Hat's off to you - Fender !!

the VG strat is pretty cool. but I prefer to get my different guitar sounds the old fashioned way. by hauling around 4 guitars, 2 amps, and about 30 effects. and spending 2-3 hours fiddling with knobs. I know its a hassle. but to me, half the fun of playing an electric instrument is screwing with all the different controls, seeing what new sounds you can get.

I have a peavey amp that sounds absolutely awful. then one day, I spent about 3 hours playing with the 3 band eq, and found an amazing mid-scooped overdriven sound. If I hadn't spent the 3 hours messing with 3 knobs, then I wouldn't have found it, and probably would've sold the amp. now I take it everywhere with me, just for the one sound.

I know the VG and other modeling guitars are cool because you can switch sounds really quick, but whatever happened to the guitarist's sense of adventure?

Nobody is losing their sense of adventure. Just the need for cartage.

Seriously, man, let's not be buggy-whip Luddites. Tehcnical progress in the service of art is cool.

I had the oppurtunity to try out a VG strat at my local music store. It was pretty nice, but I wouldn't want it. Ben13's right. I prefer getting a good electric guitar sound the old fassioned way. I know I'd rather have one simple guitar that even I could mod myself than a VG, if the cool stuff breaks, all u have is an american strat that u paid 2k for. I'd rather get a 72 tele custom. 8)

And yeah, it's so easy to find info on it. If anyone needs info on a Fender guitar than they should look it up themselves unless they consider buying it and wonder if it's worth what they'll pay for it. :?

Yea Ben, I do agree. Having been a guitarist for over 40 years, and having seen and gone through the tough times, when guitars and amps were a rarity and pretty costly stuff, I do acknowledge that fiddling around does give one the satisfaction of creating sound.

I have a Hofner Galaxie -176 manufactured in 1968 and it still is in mint condition (boy, the feel and action that guitar has is unbelievable, what with three humbuckers and a whole lot of switching, hardly available on even the topmost guitars today) even after 1500 + stage shows. I also have a Yamaha TA-20 amp, which delivers solid power and tones of the Ventures/Shadows (whose compositions I still play and relish).

But, one must consider, as Jim rightly said, technical progress in the service of art is definately worth using to th players advantage. And when the guys at Fender slog out so much for the sake of improvements, ultimately for the guitarist, why not appreciate it ? And use it !!

I for one, would surely buy a VG, the day I can get that amount !

The VG Strat is the bomb! I've been playing guitar for 35 years, classical, acoustic and electric, and I've never had more fun, or been more inspired to play, than the day I picked up my VG Strat.

Yes, its expensive. But I figured I could buy two guitars, or buy this one and essentially be able to play 6 or 7 different guitars all from the same instrument. Its just more fun than a barrell of monkeys.

The telecaster mode, cyclingjar, once you switch it there, the 5 way switch now works exactly as it would on a tele. You can use that middle position and get that cool twang that is indistunguishable from the original. The Roland pickup on the VG does not sound digital at all.

Switch to the acoustic setting, and you actually have 5 different acoustic guitar sounds to choose from. Just use the 5 way switch again. I can switch from playing a Neil Young tune on the "resonator" setting to Over the Hills and Far Away on the middle position, and they sound radically different. But both sound accurate, accoustic and so cool. Then I turn the other tuner switch to "12 string," and now I'm playing an accoustic 12 string. With the same 5 accoustic choices! Did I mention this was fun?

Then I switch the setting away from accoustic to the "humbucker" setting, and now I can play The Rain Song, with what sounds exactly like a 12 string (remember I'm still on the 12 string setting), Gibson double neck used by Mr. Page himself.

And this only scatches the surface of the possibilities.

The Drop D setting sounds right and is very handy. And yes, its not that tough to retune your E string to D, but the tuner switch gives you a open E tuning, DAD GAD, baritone, etc., which are all time consuming to complete if you had to re-tune.

I used to own a Line 6 Spider with all those effect settings, but I turned it in for a Fender Blues Junior Tweed version. Why? Because all my tone choices are now controlled by my guitar! (My set up looks just like the George Fullerton signature model/amp; Sunburst VG Strat and a cool little tweed tube amplifier to go with it.) I found that I'd rather have minimal settings on my amp, such as come with the Blues Junior, and just control my tone with my guitar.

I can't say enough about this guitar. In terms of "fun per dollar spent," best investment I've ever made.

Pick one up and play with it during your next visit to the guitar shop. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've had my VG for about 4 months now. Started playing again after a 20 year hiatus. I can't say enough about this beautiful piece of art. The sounds are "RIGHT ON", Strat, Tele, Humbucker, 12 string, etc....I love it, THANK YOU FENDER!!!!!

BTW, I also bought the G-DEC30 amplifier, JAM BUDDY in a box, OUTSTANDING!!

Got my VG last week.

For me it's the dog's bollocks!! :D

Only thing that was a SLIGHT failure was the acoustic setting.

M<aybe I'll get used to it as my only comparison is a Martin 00028 Eric Clapton so maybe not entirely fair.

On top of all the fancy stuff - at heart it's still an american Strat so what can be wrong with that?
