Hi all, first post - looking for some insight. I just got this guitar from the 'list.
It needs work, but I am not afraid to dive into any of it. The original paint has been removed and cleared over ( why - I am not sure maybe it was all scratched? ), the wood is not pretty, certainly not something I would leave as is, such as a figured ash or alder look. The original neck / string lock is gone. Someone installed an LSR on veneer shims to get it to proper height. That does not look very nice at all, but this thing plays very well. The pick guard and input cavity cover has been veneered over. These items will need to be replaced. Here is the dilemna I face: Do I replace these with components I want to use, or should I hold out and look for original replacement type pieces / used parts. The guitar has a black headstock, gold Fender logo, serial # E50xxxx, SSH pickup config., Type III trem (I believe - it has the Fender script "F" on it only), two knobs and what may be a coil split switch, 5-way switch, and edge or side mounted input. Is this a guitar worthy of full restoration (as possible) or is it a prime candidate for light customization (paint, fix nut cosmetics or replace with floyd-style, replacement pickguard - most likely an 11-hole as opposed to the original 8- holer) ?
I know pics would be better, but use your imagination for now, based on my description. Any help / insight would be appreciated - thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.

Sounds like you have a Contemporary. (Two single coils and one humbucker (at bridge position), one volume and one TBX control, coil splitter, five way selector and System II tremolo. Model 27-4100)
Personally I would refinish it and replace parts with what you want.

Thanks, that is the way I was leaning toward. This is going to become a gigging guitar as well, so I was hoping it would do well to put it the way I want.
