Out of all the Strats I've had or played, the '62 Hot Rod that I bought 2 weeks ago is the #1.I can't believe how it's just different, even though it very similar to some others I have...I think this is one I'll always choose first.
Whatever you get I hope you find "the one".
I thought I wouldn't after 40+ years,but I think I have.
Play them and go with the one that feels best.

I asked myself the same question last year and ended up buying a Custom Shop '56 NOS… but, I own an original '65 Strat so I have the 62-65 L series covered. I played '57 AVRI and '57 Hot Rod Strats before I decided and the '56 NOS was my choice. It's an amazing guitar.

I have never had the chance to play a '62 AVRI but I'm sure it's an excellent guitar. I'd say you win either way.

I would also steer clear of the '57 Champ. That's Deluxe Reverb Reissue money for a 5 watt amp. :)

John

Well, I think I have ruled out the 5 watt 57 champ, I have to agree with several of you guys - too much money for what it is. With that said, I have been looking at a Princeton Reverb ReIssue, Blues Deluxe and Blues Junior NOS.

I'm thinking the 62 avri might be too close in sound to my 57, they both have the 3 way switch and the 57/62 pickups. Where as the 56 CS NOS is very different - pickups, switching, neck etc...I cleaned house and sold a ton of gear to include a 65 TRRI, 52 AVRI Tele, 55 Thinskin tele and a 72 thinline.
I'm down to my 57 avri strat, 60th anniversary american standard tele and a modded champion 600 amp.

My goal is to have one more strat and I want to make it a nice one with a nice amp (that doesn't weigh more than 50lbs).

here is the 56 I'm intersted in:

Mmmm, Fiesta Red. I think my mind would be made up. :)

I'm a huge fan of Fender's Vintage Reissue amps so I would lean toward the Princeton Reverb from the amps you listed. I also wouldn't rule out a Deluxe Reverb Reissue. The DRRI's dry, less bright, no reverb/tremolo channel and larger speaker and cabinet made me choose it over the Princeton. It's 8 pounds heavier but I don't have any problems moving it around the house. The Twin stays where it is.

My '56 NOS Strat with the 3 way pickup selector switch lodged between the neck and middle positions, through my '65 Deluxe Reverb or Twin Custom 15 Reissue amps is pure Fender tone heaven.

john.bohn,

thanks for the advice, right now I'm leaning more towards the 56 nos, I have to color choices: the fieesta red or inca silver. And I'm fairly certain the amp choice is going to be a Princeton.
I really think the 62 avri is an awesome strat, I just don't want to get it and then always be looking at a cs with the thought "I should have bought that one".
So with that said, I think I have really in my mind have made my choice, now it becomes a color choice.

thanks everyone,

Nic

You're welcome. It sounds like you're zeroing in on the guitar/amp combination you really want, and that's all that matters. Good luck!

Inca Silver is a very cool color but Fiesta Red is an absolute knockout.

Hi Guys,

Well, I made a total turn around on the amp choice, I was about to place my order for the Princeton when I received the 15% off coupon from MF, so instead I bought the 57 Champ. It was the amp I really wanted but I just could not part with 1K, so with the discount it came to $849.00....and that sealed the deal. So it's on the way, it'll be here monday.

Guitar update: I decided to go with the 62 AVRI Strat in Oly White. After comparing all the features and pros vs cons of what I like, the 62 came out on top. I really prefer the 7.25 radius with vintage frets. And this will be my first rosewood fretboard. So, with the 15% discount, I could just not pass it up.....$1359.99.

Pictures of everything to follow.

thanks everyone for all the input.

Nic

Congrats, Nic. That's one sweet guitar/amp combo. Enjoy!

Looking forward to pics and these inquiring ears would like to hear about the tone differences between the '57 and "62 AVRIs.
