A couple of years ago I bought a mexican made strat. What kind of stock pickups come with the mexican made strats and can you make the guitar sound even better by adding higher quality pickups? In what other ways could you improve the sound of the guitar?

A friend of mine, who knows more about electric guitars than I, had suggested that I go to a Guitar Center and play all the different strats. I had it set in my mind that an american made strat would be better than one made out of the country. He actually went with me and we spent a couple of hours there playing the different strats that Guitar Center had in stock and it came down to this mexican made with a maple fretboard. To me I couldn't distinguish any significant difference between the american made ones and this mexican strat so I went with the mexican one since it was several hundred dollars cheaper.

I appreciate any advice or instruction anybody would like to give to me. I am still in the basic level of learning about the ins and outs of electric guitars.
Thanks,
Smiledoc

Ceramic pups are probably on it. They are not bad, but yes, you can improve the sound many ways besides changing pickups, which I'll refer to as PUPS from here in.

I have several Strats that I've changed pups, bridges, nuts, tuners, necks, electronics, etc. It all depends on what sound that you're looking for. There are some cool soundclips in the accessories forum here with different sounding pups.

Your amplifier makes a HUGE difference also.

I have played a few MIM Strats that have sounded quite good through the years, but once you start modifying them, you tend to build in some of that special mojo !

Thanks, Miami Mike,
How would I distinguish a ceramic pup? The music I like to play is blues based rock and every now and then I'll turn my gain up and jam a little heavier.

I have a Fender Blues Junior and the new Mesa Boogie 5/25 amp. I have the Boss Blues Driver and the distortion pedal.

Thanks again,
Smiledoc

Just have fun! What kind of actual sound are you looking for anyway? Who are your favorite artists? Consider that. I know my favorite artists influence my music, so I try to figure out in my head what would make a particular lick or sound I know sound better to suit my taste. Just look at the descriptions of the different pickups, if you hear a song you really like find out what the artists use and try to incorporate that sound into what YOU like to play. For instance, I like playing blues, and I also like playing Led Zepplin type of music, so naturally I'd want to stick some hot vintage style pups in my guitar, so the ones I want are vintage noiseless pickups. What do YOU want?

I'll also agree with Miami Mike by saying that your amp is a really big factor. Try differant ones out and see which one puts out a sound that you like. A lot of times amps have differant distortion sounds (al la Peavey vs Marshall). Just find your perfect mix and have fun with it!
