Clapton uses a miriad of effects and distortions to fatten up his sound, I reckon 500.00 bucks worth of decent effects can do the trick

Hi Xan.cowen, good luck trying to get a Strat to sound like a Les Paul.I won't say that it's impossible but it's very improbable that it could be done convincingly. The sound of the single coil and humbucker and their responsiveness is so far apart that getting one to sound like the other would be a real challenge.I have a Vox AD120VTH an excellent modelling amp, probably one of the best but getting a humbucker tone from a Strat with that can't be done.By the time you got any Strat to sound remotely like a Les Paul you would probably be after spending enough money to buy a Les Paul anyway.

Here is one way I did it:

Also if your looking for a fatter sound in the neck, as Seymour Duncan Little 59 or the JB single coil humbucker works nice too. While not a full sized humbucker, it will do well. If it is the bridge humbucker your looking at, Seymour Duncan makes these for the neck and bridge. One thing that will happen, if you put them in both the neck and bridge you will loose a lot of that nice Strat quack in positions #2 & 4

I can get some Les Paulish tones out of my Strat and my Jekyll and Hyde. The suggested ZZ Top setting gets you close.

Xhefri you never cease to amaze me.lol It is one thing being an electronics wiz but boy you were also blessed with good taste as you always design them perfectly. The black with the chrome/silver hardware and black pearloid pick guard is just off the chart my friend.

Personally I can get a decent LP-ish sound out of just my Strat and a Proco RAT, it gives me just the right amount of compression and boost after fiddling around for a bit. I usually opt for the tele when I go for that type of tone though, a Strat sounds best when it sounds like a strat IMHO.

Thanks jeebus. I am a simple kind of guy too, but love messing around with getting different tones from my guitars.

how i do it is using the s1 switch in (wires 2 sing coils in series)
in between settings as i have aftermarket pickups

but the main thing as any clapton fan wil tell you is a healthy dose
of mids try using a marshall setting and crank your mids up
and roll the tone back a little on your guitar

or if you got the cash the clapton mid boost kit
is awesome I got to play one for a couple weeks
and man i'm missing it now
you can go from sparkley clean to super fat with gain
or an in between jazz sound

You can get a decent "scooped" tone by selecting the bridge/middle position and then rolling off the middle tone pot. It won't get you all the way there but it is a ballsier tone than what you usually associate with strats. My favorite pedal to use is the BOSS Turbo Distortion. I know it is cheap but it sounds great. Combine the pickup setting with a pedal like that and you are ready to rock.
