I just switched the factory 9's to bullet 10's and I think they are great so far but they only have about 6 hrs on them so we'll see. I did have to tighten the tension screws on the trem a slight bit and I did a V shape on the springs seems to be pretty good so far.

Is it essential to have Fender bullet-type strings on a Strat? If so, do they make coated ones?

if you play the tremolo heavily, yes
if it is a hardtail , no

This topic pops up here every month or so. Either way, the idea behind Bullet strings is that the ends are shaped to fit in the holes of a Strat trem block. In theory this better fit means you should have better tuning stability, better sustain, etc.. The truth of the matter however is that clearly, it doesn't really make that big a difference at all. MANY people (including some very famous players) use various brands of ball end strings without a problem...ultimately it just comes down to personal preference.

Personally I used GHS .009 Boomers on all of my electrics almost exclusively for many years but over the past year or so I've started moving my Strats over to .010 Fender Super 250's...I just like the sound and the feel of the 250's a bit better than the Boomers (at least on my Strats). In all honesty, I've probably tried every brand of string out there at one time or another...I just come back to what I like.

Ball end vs. bullet end, coated vs. uncoated, .009's vs. .010's vs .011's...it's all good. Just use what you like.

Fender should get the hell out of the string making business (although I suspect they actually buy them in and rebrand), because the product is terrible.

Just my 2c worth as they say..

Wow...well, as they are you are certainly welcome to your opinion but I -really- have to disagree with that. As I just said to the OP there, Fender strings are actually my brand of choice at the moment...to my hands and ears they're very decent to say the least. I've played D'Addario, Ernie Ball, SIT's, Dunlaps, Gibson's and MANY other brands...with very few exceptions it's not like one brand is really -that- much better or worse than any other. Regardless, while I can't really begin to imagine what standards you're holding Fender strings to that you would honestly think their "terrible" and that Fender should "get the hell out of the string making business" but I for one am glad they don't typically follow such advice...personally I like their product and I'm quite glad they're finally coming back on to store shelves. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I have used D'Addario 8-38 ball end strings on all my Strats for about 30 yrs and never had a problem with tuning,I play Hendrix stuff so needless to say I really crank the vibrato.String type and tuning are entirely dependent on set up and especially how you put your strings on and keeping possible snagging or binding points well lubed.

My complaint about them is the way they feel.. like they're rusted ot pitted.. they don't look like they are, but I can't be doing with that grittiness.

If they work for other folks, then thats cool of course.

I have posted this a few times but there are like 35 brands of strings that are made in the same factory so that tells you something right there. Any quality brand named string will do and I think most of us are just in the habit of asking for a certain brand. For years all I used were Fender strings till one day they were out and the guy said try D'adarrio and that is what I have been using ever since. But to be honest if you strung up 2 guitars with both brands of the same gauge I would have a 50-50 chance of telling you what strings I were playing.

Just curious as to what are some of the 35 brands made at the same factory and where is that factory located? Or can you point me to where I can find out that info myself? Thanks.

I like it when there are strings on my guitar. Yes, much better than no strings.

Heck no! The first I did with my strat is yank those bullets off my guitar. I use both Cleartone and Dean Markley strings. Cleartones for my acoustic and Dean Markley Vintage Reissue 1973. Fender's wear out too soon and lose their flavor....

A Friend of mine is a luthier and owns a small shop I asked him "What's the deal with these new Fender strings?"

His answer was, "They are made at the D'Addario factory."

I was told the same thing. We'll see.

I've had bad luck with Fender strings. Breaking all the time. I remember jamming with friends and stopping, maybe three times a sessions to replace broken strings (and I'm not a hard player). I finally gave up.......tried different brands, and never a problem again.
