Neck shape, like so many other things is a matter of personal choice..some folks like certain shape, other folks like something else. That said, I would strongly suggest that if you've never played a V neck, play one BEFORE you buy! I can't speak for others...and I know there are people who do live V necks but personally I -hated- them! Take the thick end of a baseball back, shave 3 sides flat so it's shaped like a triangle and that's a Fender V neck!

Now I'm not saying this is the case with you...some folks -do- like them and you could very well be one of them but this is NOT a subtle difference such as a "D" shape versus a "C" shape or even your average Fender vs. your average Gibson neck...those V necks are really thick and chunky and have a very different feel from most other guitar necks. So again if you're thinking about buying one, try it before you fork out your bread...maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't.

Now personally, I like the contemporary "C" shape myself...play just about any MIM Standard over the past 15 years or so and -that- is what I like personally. I also really love the D shape that I have on my '85 MIJ Squire...rumor has it that it might be a '62 reissue neck but I can't confirm that but either way, it's got a really sweet feel. Personally I like a slimmer neck myself...for a guy my size, I actually have rather small hands so most often times that C shape usually works best for me.

Seriously, a guitar neck is NOT like strings or even pickups...if you don't like your strings or your pickups, you can slap new one's on. A neck though you're generally stuck with and if you don't like that neck, chances are you're not going to play the guitar. Because a V neck is so different from what most folks are used to, I strongly recommend playing one so you can decide whether or not they're for you.

Anyways, just my $.02 worth,
Jim

I love the v neck on my JD Tele. I have a much softer v on my Classic 50's Strat but I do prefer the fatter v on the Tele. Definitely try before you buy though.

I find the C neck more comfortable however neck preference is purely subjective.Your best bet is not to take the opinion or suggestions of others as gospel because what I prefer may be a dog in your hands.

Exactly. The C shaped neck is the neck shape to make most people happy.I actually prefer a D shape like the SRV,but profile is one part of the equation ,there is also radius and fretsize to consider.Best bet is to try as many different necks as you can.You will know when you find the right one.

I have a '57 RI that has a soft V and I love it.My hands are not huge and the neck fits my palm just right, but I just bought a '62 Hot Rod that has a C shape that seems full and it feels great also.
Try them out, they're not that far apart in difference,I think you'll like either.

The soft V on my hotrod seems tiny compared to my Deluxe's C and is utterly dwarfed by the U/D shape of my squier series strat.

I think all three necks are very different to each other. If I had to buy before try I'd go for a C neck as its a good for everyone compromise. I know some love it, but no one hates it. I'm sure it was made to suit everyone and thats why its staple on the 2 biggest sellers.

Of my guitars I prefer the U/D shape of the squier series. It's like my Baja telecasters V shape which is a very different thing to a strat V shape.

In my opinion, the V necks are more comfortable but the C necks are faster.

Agreed, but make sure you don't get a modern C- way too thin, hard to dig in. get a vintage style C shape that's larger, almost like a U shape
