So what is the deal with the plastic "shielding" under the '62 reissue pickguard?
I understand the form and function of the copper/aluminum shielding, but why plastic?
It wasn't on the original '62's was it?

Just curious-N 8)

A thin aluminum shield the exact shape and cutouts (save for the beveled edges) of the pickguard is what is used on the RI as was on the original. Aside from being an insulator, plastic offers no form of electrical shielding, per se and is not original to either the RI or the originals.

Last week I bought a beautiful Sherwood Green '62 Hot Rod and haven't looked under the "hood" yet but just looking at it,it looks like the aluminum shield is under there.
I wish I could post pics, after 40 years of playing, this just might be "the one"....tones.....looks....feel...the guitar gods were smiling when this one was born.

I've never heard of a plastic layer under the pickguard on '62 reissues. Like Martian said, plastic would serve no shielding purpose. Are you asking because you have a '62 with plastic under the guard? Did you buy it used and the previous owner put plastic there? Can you take a pic?

Maybe that piece is painted or impregnated with some type of material with shielding properties. Just a guess.

I have absolutely NO factual basis for what I'm about to say (which I would presume, qualifies for bonafide, "Infallible Web Dogma"): Either someone switched it out because they wanted the real shield or someone was taking a shortcut somewhere. YMMV.

I've never seen or heard of anything like it so you're probably right Martian!!
Is there anything to be gained by raising the pick guard? Maybe his pg screws were too long and instead of buying new screws he just added another pg underneath so they would work. Or maybe the added mass of double pg's it produces more sustain!! Now that qualifies as "Infallible Web Dogma!!"

Yea, that's it! Plus, the pickguard screws being less screwed into the body increases sustain!!

So remember all you naive guitar enthusiasts, you read it HERE first: Two pickguards, one on top of the other along with semi-sunk pickguard screws on Stratocasters POSITIVELY increase sustain!!

That doesn't look like plastic to me. It looks like the usual full pickguard sized shield that Fender used in the early 60's and they use again for their period correct '62 Reissue.

Did you take this pic and have these items in front of you to hold and confirm it is some sort shiny plastic and not aluminum??? It sure looks like a legit '62 full size pickguard shield to me.

See the extra screw hole someone put between the middle and neck pickup on the bass side? You can use this shield with either the '62 or the modern screw hole pattern.

Unless we're approaching this from the wrong direction. Maybe its a pickguard to protect the other pickguard from playing scratches. Like you said, "you can't be too careful".

The pic isn't mine. It's an Ebay post. I have no idea what the Heck it is...
The pickguard still has the film new plastic film on it.
I am traveling currently and will post the link to it when I get back.
