I'm pretty much a beginner (but 47 years old), but my #1 influence is Alex Lifeson. I really like SRV but can't really play his stuff yet. A more recent find, but an older band is 38 Special. Really like Don Barnes rythyms.

Limelight (Rush) and Back Where you Belong (38 Special) are the 1st 2 songs I have learned completely, so they will always be special songs!

SRV, Jimmie Vaughan, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Albert King, Buddy Guy etc.

I play other styles of music too, but most of the time it's blues.

I made that list up for another forum a couple years ago. Copied and pasted it here. It's profile page asked to list influences. I spent quite some time jotting down all my favorite songs and bands. Those guitarists are why I love music and guitars. They all influenced me. Think Mississippi Queen, Long Cool Woman, Green River, Piece of my Heart. Etc, etc. I added to the list over a couple days as I'd think of more. I organized it in alphabetical order as it seemed like a good idea. Granted, about a third of the guitarists names I didn't recall at the time, and had to look up.

Perhaps you'll read the list and note there are many excellent guitarists that aren't on it. Beck, Vai for example. A few perhaps because I didn't think of them. Most because I don't listen to them. No real new guys, either. I'm kinda stuck in a time warp, music wise. Notice the comments I made next to a few?

My Mom, pretty older cousins and friends older sisters began spinning 45's for me while I was still crawling. I remember seeing the Beatles first appearance on Ed Sullivan. I wasn't quite 5. That explaines my 6122-62 and the Rose I bought for my Son. (see below).

I'm 50 and love Rock and Roll. Beatles through Zeppelin, including Aerosmith and AC/DC. Pepper in some Blues, mostly Chicago, some 50's Rock and some of the old Motown.

Playing guitar since I was 10.

I'd post some pics but I'm at work on a govt. computer and can't access photobucket, but they're spotted through out this forum. Maybe I'll dig a couple up for you.

Here's my gear. I didn't pull this list off the internet, either.

Now, just because I've got all this junk doesn't mean I can play or know what I'm talking about. But it hints at it. And one thing's for sure. I can make a hell of a lot of noise.

If you'd like to see the rest including a bitchin' drum kit, check this out. You don't have to be member to look at my albums.

I'm twice divorced, only child is my Son who's off to college. Comes home on the weekends. I quit drinkin' 3 years ago and all I do is work and play guitars.

By the way, I'm at work now. My Tele and Bj are sitting right next to me like you see in the next to last pic. I'm listening to Laura Ingram on the O'Reilly factor and bs'ing here. Pretty cool job, huh? Guess how much money I make. Hint. A lot.

I'd like to see Steve Vai play a stratocaster too.

Some provide inspiration, and some provided and continue to provide the real urge to play. It's good to learn from anybody you listen to, but true influences shape your phrasing and choice of tone, scales, etc...
