There is a lot of talk about Nitro vs Poly or Maple vs Rosewood and the effect on tone. When color has been totaly overlooked.
I think everyone knows that Antique White sounds better that Artic white. And Blue guitars don't sound as good as Red guitars.

I think we all obsess over little thinks that don't really matter in the pursuit of tone. When we should be concentrating on PLAY'EN GUITAR and not worring about the little stuff. Everything has an effect on tone don't get me wrong, but the biggest effect on tone is how well you play not so much what finish or neck wood you play.

But you really can hear a difference in Antique white over Artic White. LOL

There are some elitists that think they can tell the difference between battery types as well.

Yeah there are a lot of myths, voodoo and superstition that go along with anything involving sound.

I would be interested in a list of what people think affects the tone more.
My top three would be:
Pickups
Body Wood
Neck Wood

And if you want to consider the whole signal chain, I would put amp up after pickups.

The amp does make a differance. If you want to get a guitar, get a guitar. If you like the way the guitar feels and plays, get it. If you want a guitar becuase it looks cool, take the chance or don't get it. DON'T LET OTHER PEOPLE MAKE UP YOUR MIND FOR YOU! GET WHAT YOU WANT!

I am SO tired of people investigating every little nuince of what makes guitars sound good. It ruins the whole spirit of having one. Even something as ugly as a beat up old Ibanez electric can make someone satisfied if they take care of it and play it as if it's all they do. Find a lil buddy and buy it guys! Gosh! :?

I like the people who spend money on their high priced amps and custom shop guitars, but run them through crappy wires completely degrading their "perfect" sounding gear.

No one mentioned pick attack. Or finger pressure on hammers and pulls. Or what percentage body fat your fingers are. Or.......

If you like the way you sound be happy with it.

P.S. When I change the batteries in my strat I'm gonna try Duracell this time!

What you have to do is melt off your finger prints. Then you can shred faster because you won't get as much friction from the grooves in your fingers. It can improve playing speed by up to 489.3%

It goes like this:

1. The way you play
2. Amp
3. Pickups and or bridge (it's a toss-up)
4. Body resonance (NOT wood type)
5. Strings

Everything else is pure voodoo.

I've got no room to talk.
I've spent a lot of dough trying to improve my tone.
And i have to a certian degree, I am very happy with my tone.
I get Props all the time, But i have found that i sound like me no matter what i'm playing. be it good or bad it's just the way it is.

So the majority of tone is in the player
IMHO
