I have contacted this seller on this Strat and have made arrangements to go checkout the guitar and play it and most likely buy it..I'm not real familiar with MIJ Strats...So i would like to ask the forum about it and what to look for.

This one has a excellent price but it has a couple issues ..One is the tuners were replaced and the holes from the old tuners were left instead of patched .The other is the bridge pick up cuts in and out.None of these are major issues due to the price..It is kind of a project guitar but for the price i think it is a pretty good deal..

I would also like to make sure it is what it is represented to be and that is a 84 to 87 MIJ Strat...Thanks for any help on this guitar http://stlouis.craigslist.org/msg/1698231003.html

An E5 MIJ could very well be a 1985. If it was a E4 American it would be an 87 or 88.

It's legit.

Incidentally, if that shorting out pickup is not due to the switch but because the pickup itself is 'tired', I have an '84 MIJ Fender Strat pickup you could replace it with. Just let me know and we'll work something out.

The Black headstock would lead me to believe it is a Contemporary model, HOWEVER the bridge is wrong, the jack plate is in the wrong place, and it is a 10 hole pickguard.

I would be leary of this one.

Chet:

I was told my MIJ is an 86 because it's an E serial and it starts with E6. Is that correct ?

If that is it.. That is definitely not a project in my book.. I replaced the entire wiring harness in my MIJ strat with USA pots/switch... But that only cost $45... Now the electronics are like brand new and the guitar sounds great..

E6 could be anywhere in the 84-89 range. Remove the neck and check the dates written on the end of the neck and in the neck pocket.
